The benefits of playdough for children's development
Strength in the core, upper body and fine motor is integral to being able to draw and writing with a pencil.
As our preschool children are building pre-literacy and numeracy skills they relish in the opportunities to build hand strength and co-ordination in fun and interactive ways. This can be done through providing tools and materials such as playdough to poke, roll, pinch and cut, scissors for cutting, threading, a hole punch to push and squeeze, a glue stick and sticky tape dispenser. While we spend time drawing and writing throughout the preschool day, we also acknowledge the importance of these other experiences to support skills.
'I'm the King of the Mountain' by Joy Cowley Comes to Life at Preschool
With a few simple props, the preschool children became characters from the storybook, 'I'm the King of the Mountain'. Imitating the words from the story, the children engaged fully with the characters and storyline as the whole group sang along to the repetitive verse; "I'm the King of the Mountain. I'm the King of the Mountain."
Engaging with text in a variety of ways, supports children's literacy skills by extending their vocabulary and understanding of the storyline and its messaging. Being an active participant in the learning process builds further their capacity to interpret the meaning of the text and build concept development. (EYLF V2 Outcome 4 & 5)
We have several budding actors and actresses within our preschool groups.
