2023 Valedictory Speech

“What are your plans for next year” is a phrase that haunts any year 12 student at the start of their final schooling year. For some, this question would have had an answer before the start of this year, and for others, this question still hasn’t been answered. Year 12 students are constantly made to think forward throughout the last year of their schooling, wondering what ATAR score, apprenticeship and/or life experiences will greet us at the end of the year. However, all year 12’s far too often forget to truly appreciate the many moments and companionship experienced throughout the final 12 months of our schooling.

Every ‘last’ throughout the year, such as the last swimming and athletic carnivals (and thankfully last lecture), to the last time we all simply sat in the common room together enjoying each other’s company. The growth of every individual throughout the most rewarding year of our young lives so far was also extremely special to witness, such as brave, selfless acts on summit camp as well as the countless hours (some) individuals spent studying and working towards completing the years’ work. There are just too many memories to count.

However, all of these ‘lasts’ are not possible without former and current peers and teachers, as well as the massive sacrifices our families have consistently made so we can succeed to our potential. Without you all, being able to somewhat cope with the stress of exams and study would not have been possible. How any of you have dealt with our group for so long is beyond all of us.

After waiting the entire year to finally be free from school, now that we are here, truthfully, it really does feel a bit anti-climactic. However, the excitement of beginning the next phase of our lives can’t be denied. I want to personally thank everyone in the class of 2023, as imperfect as our group was, I wouldn’t change any of you if I had the chance to do it all again.

To the class of 2024, make sure you embrace every moment next year, even the stressful and challenging times you’ll face. Put as much effort and care into the year as you possibly can, and make sure you switch your brain off at times to keep your sanity. Relish in every last that presents itself and build a strong partnership with all of your teachers, I promise they’ll become some of your best friends.
