Creation and Innovation in Year 5

It has been a fantastic time in Year 5 over this semester with many different opportunities taking place.

The class had a lot of fun with Book Week, showing a great sense of fun and community in presenting their costumes to each other and to campus.

To add some lunchtime activity to our community, the Year 5 class hosted a table top mini golf course towards the end of Term 3. There were many different designs that were incredibly creative and fun, the many students who came in loved the opportunity!

In Design Technology, we have explored how designers take advantage of different materials and their properties to create different objects. We focused on designing some very different and creative lamps out of easily found and recycled materials. The students really leapt into this task, using growth mindsets to overcome challenges and being amazed at the different examples being created. We then put together an Illuminate Pilgrim event in the PAC for the Year 5s and 6s, which looked spectacular! All the students did a fantastic job!

This term in Design Technology we are looking at combining design and digital technology through the use of Lego Spike Prime kits. This codable Lego system allows users to construct, then code the functional parts to perform movements. The class has loved the opportunity to use this system in designing a vehicle to move around a track and has provided some great feedback on how this lesson could be enhanced for future classes.

As always, we are continuing to engage students through fun and meaningful experiences here at Pilgrim to create lasting memories of this brilliant community.

Aquatic Educational Program

This week Foundation to Year 4 classes have been at the State Aquatic Centre, Marion, for our aquatics lessons. The beautiful weather meant lots of excitement and joy in getting to be in the water. Lots of thongs, goggles, towels in all colours were seen and squeals of laughter were heard as the students travelled by bus and then found their instructors and learnt some different things. From blowing bubbles underwater, floating on backs, practising a stroke or two of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke to duck diving for sticks. The sessions have had a focus on being safe in the water and what to do in an emergency. What fun!

Foundation and Year 1 Excursion

The Foundation and Year 1 students enjoyed an excursion to Glenthorne National Park this week to link with their iUnit learning.

The Foundation's focus is Special Places and understanding the importance of connection to country for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Year 1s are investigating natural, built, and managed structures.

We began our day at the home of one of our students which backs onto Glenthorne National Park. His mum shared that where they live is their special place and that they are doing lots of things to care for their land - rejuvenating, replanting, and working with Glenthorne National Park.

We then went on and arrived at the playground where we walked on a trail, taking in some of the information provided on the signs and looking at the natural, built, and managed structures along the way.

The playground was a highlight and a great day was had by all.

Year 6 Kangaroo Island Camp

In Week 3 the Year 6 class along with Mrs Wicks, Mr Wildman and Mrs Carpenter spent a wonderful 4 days on Kangaroo Island. We were taken on a variety of different tours on the island by Beyond the Classroom. Highlights were Seal Bay, visiting the Raptor Domain, sandboarding, going on an ocean dolphin cruise and exploring Remarkable Rocks. At the Raptor Domain, the students were very brave to hold a range of different snakes and lizards. The teachers had a go too! We also visited Living Honey where we learnt about how amazing bees are, and we were all able to taste the honey. Many students spent their money buying a jar of delicious honey. A trip to Stokes Bay on a sunny afternoon was lots of fun, with students swimming and exploring the small rock caves. Back at the campsite we had many fun times of cricket, meals together and night games. It was a full and adventurous time, and many wonderful memories were made.
