A Podiatrist is a registered health professional who diagnoses, treats, and prevents conditions of the feet, ankles, and lower limbs.

 

They help people of all ages improve mobility, comfort, and overall quality of life.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and treat foot and ankle conditions

  • Manage sports injuries and movement issues

  • Treat foot problems related to diabetes and chronic disease

  • Perform minor surgical procedures (e.g. ingrown toenails)

  • Prescribe orthotics and footwear advice

  • Educate patients on injury prevention and foot care.

     

Where Do Podiatrists Work?

  • Private podiatry clinics

  • Hospitals and health clinics

  • Sports and rehabilitation centres

  • Aged care facilities

  • Community health services

  • Self-employed / private practice.

     

Study Pathway:

Step 1: Complete an Accredited Degree

Podiatry is a specialised professional degree (no majors).

Common degree titles:

  • Bachelor of Podiatry

  • Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine

  • Bachelor of Health Science (Podiatry)

Step 2: Professional Registration

  • Graduates must register with AHPRA

  • Only registered practitioners can use the title “Podiatrist”.

     

Career Outcomes:

  • General Podiatrist

  • Sports Podiatrist

  • Paediatric Podiatrist

  • High-risk foot specialist (e.g. diabetes care)

  • Podiatric Surgeon (with further training)

  • Clinic owner / private practitioner.

Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine / Degrees / The University of Newcastle, Australia

Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine - Charles Sturt University

 

Alternatively, you can do a Bachelor of Health Science and then a Master of Podiatry.
