Wellbeing - Respectful Relationships

Building Respectful Relationships at St Peter’s

Respectful Relationships is an initiative that supports schools and early childhood settings to promote and model respect and equality. It also helps educators teach children how to build healthy relationships, as well as develop resilience and confidence.

Next term, we will be implementing the Respectful Relationships program across the school. Through this, students will engage with the Health Curriculum and the Personal and Social Capability (also known as Social and Emotional Learning – SEL).

Building respectful relationships relies on students having opportunities to develop skills in areas such as:

  • self-awareness, self-management and social awareness
  • relationship skills
  • decision-making and problem-solving
  • ethics, values and social norms
  • challenging stereotypes
  • positive gender relationships

Research shows that when young people learn about respectful relationships, they experience improved academic outcomes, demonstrate more positive social behaviours, and have lower rates of mental health concerns. They are also less likely to engage in violent, risky or disruptive behaviour. This approach supports a positive school culture where all children can develop relationships based on equality, respect and safety.

Throughout the program, students will explore the following topics:

  • Emotional Literacy
  • Personal Strengths
  • Positive Coping
  • Problem Solving
  • Stress Management
  • Help-Seeking
  • Gender and Identity
  • Positive Gender Relations

This learning will be closely connected to our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) expectations and daily routines, further supporting students’ social, emotional and academic growth.

We look forward to sharing this learning journey with you. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
