NSW GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

On 18 March, Hallie and Myles participated in the NSW Government’s Leadership Program, joining school captains from across New South Wales at Parliament House in Sydney to learn more about how government functions.

Throughout the day, they had the opportunity to watch both Houses of Parliament in session and observe Question Time firsthand. Between these sessions, the Parliament Education Office team led Q&A discussions to help students better understand what they had seen and how government works for the people it represents. Hallie and Myles also had the chance to meet local member Brendan Moylan, MP along with other members from across the state, and hear their perspectives on the role of government.

Brendan Moylan, MP then organised lunch in the Presidential Dining Room for school captains from across his electorate. During this special experience, both Mr Moylan, MP and President of the Legislative Council Ben Franklin, M invited students to share feedback about the issues and concerns affecting their local communities. It was a unique privilege, with the room usually reserved for royalty and visiting dignitaries.

The students also enjoyed a small tour of the original Parliament chamber, where they viewed convict-era drawings and learned more about the rich history of the site.

The day concluded with a visit to Government House, where they heard from the Governor of New South Wales, Margaret Beazley AC, and developed a deeper understanding of the Governor’s role in our democracy.

Overall, it was a fantastic day and a valuable opportunity for Hallie and Myles to strengthen their understanding of democracy and leadership in New South Wales.

A thank you to Mr Stewart for accompanying Hallie and Myles and supporting them throughout the experience.
