Year 7 SEE@K Science Excursion to Melbourne Zoo

On 30 March, our Year 7 SEE@K Science classes (7C and 7D) enjoyed an exciting and engaging excursion to Melbourne Zoo as part of their current “Habitats and Interactions” unit.

Students participated in an educational session focused on trophic levels and food webs, where they explored how energy flows through ecosystems. Building on this, they discussed trophic cascades and examined the impact humans can have on ecosystems, linking their learning directly to real-world conservation challenges.

The day also provided the opportunity to explore a wide range of animal exhibits, helping students make meaningful connections between theory and observation. A highlight for 7C was an unforgettable moment when the lions dramatically interrupted their education session—roaring loudly and enjoying their meal, much to the students’ amazement!

Overall, the excursion was a valuable and memorable experience, reinforcing key science concepts while fostering curiosity about the natural world and the importance of protecting it.

The Viral Enigma - STEM Excursion

Twenty of our high-achieving Year 9 and 10 students recently participated in an engaging full-day excursion to Quantum Victoria, where they tackled the Viral Enigma challenge — an interactive investigation into genetics, DNA coding and viral behaviour.

Working in small collaborative groups alongside Craigieburn Secondary College, students explored essential genetic principles by sequencing nucleotides and using sophisticated computer simulations to transcribe and translate their designed DNA into proteins. This process allowed them to see firsthand how mutations can impact protein structure and function, and how such changes may affect a virus’s capacity to become more virulent. The experience provided a valuable opportunity to bring complex scientific concepts to life and strengthened their understanding of real-world applications.

A standout moment of the day was The Cube, Quantum Victoria’s custom-designed alternate reality game. In this high-energy challenge, students worked against the clock to solve problems and stop a simulated global pandemic from spreading uncontrollably. Their ingenuity, problem-solving skills and teamwork were thoroughly tested — and they responded with enthusiasm and determination.

Overall, the excursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to extend their knowledge, apply scientific thinking in dynamic ways, and experience the excitement of STEM learning beyond the classroom.
