As we reach the final week of Term 1, it has been fantastic to see the continued engagement and enthusiasm across all of our Science classes.

Our Year 7 students have completed their first CAT on the topic Science-y, focusing on key science skills that will support their learning throughout the year.

Year 8 students have been exploring electricity, with fun and interactive lessons investigating static electricity — including using the Van de Graaff generator to observe charges in action.

Year 9 students have been learning about control systems, recently conducting an experiment to investigate different types of stimuli and responses, helping them understand how the body detects and reacts to changes in the environment.

In Year 10, Biology students have been studying DNA and cell division, while Chemistry students have been investigating the properties of ionic, covalent and metallic substances.

Our Year 12 Psychology students have been applying their understanding of classical conditioning in a hands-on way, attempting to condition their peers to flinch in response to a target word — a fun and memorable way to experience learning in action.

They were also fortunate to have a visit from Therapy Animals Australia, where Brad Rundle and his service dog Radar demonstrated how classical and operant conditioning are used in real-world settings to support others.

Our Year 12 Environmental Science students recently visited Melbourne Zoo, where they explored biodiversity, critically endangered species, and conservation efforts. A highlight of the day was an informative presentation on the Southern Corroboree Frog, focusing on why the species is at risk and the strategies scientists are using to prevent extinction. Students also enjoyed observing the zoo’s animals, including an exciting moment seeing baby snow leopards exploring their enclosure with their mother on just their second day out. It was a valuable opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with real-world environmental science.

It has been a wonderful term filled with engaging activities and meaningful learning experiences. We look forward to building on this momentum in Term 2.
