Laptop Care — Staying Cool Matters
We’ve had a rise in overheating laptops — especially from devices being used on beds, cushions, or laps. These soft surfaces block the vents, causing the laptop to trap heat, slow down, and wear out faster.
Here’s how to protect your device:
💻 Use your laptop on a hard, flat surface like a desk or table.
💻 If using it on a bed or couch, place a solid tray or book underneath to allow airflow.
💻 Make sure the air vents (usually on the bottom or sides) aren’t covered.
💻Restart your laptop at least once a week to help install updates and improve performance.
A cooler laptop runs more efficiently - and the battery will last longer on a single charge.
Outlook - Help Students Stay Organised
Most students are now using Outlook for school communication - and it can be a helpful tool if used well. Parents can support their children by encouraging a few simple habits that make a big difference in staying on top of schoolwork and notices.
Here’s how students can use Outlook more effectively:
Pin Important Emails
- Keeping key messages (like assignment details or school notices) pinned to the top of the inbox prevents them from getting lost.
Use the Calendar
- Adding due dates, reminders, and recurring events can help students manage their time — especially during busy weeks.
Organise with Folders
- Setting up folders for each subject or type of message (e.g. Assignments, Notices) helps keep the inbox clear and manageable.
Search with Keywords
- If something goes missing, students can quickly search using a teacher’s name or a topic keyword.
Write Clear Emails
- When students need to contact a teacher, it helps to include their name, class, and a short explanation of the question or request.
Even a few of these habits can make communication and organisation much smoother - especially as workloads increase throughout the term.
Keeping devices in good condition and using tools like Outlook effectively can make everyday school life a little smoother for everyone. A few small habits — like giving your laptop room to breathe or staying on top of emails — can go a long way. If you ever need help putting these tips into practice, the IT team at St Mary’s is here to help.
