Year 1 Bulletin

Learning Intention: To identify what self-compassion is and the ways I can treat myself like a best friend.
Learning Experience Overview:
For wellbeing this week, we have been self-reflecting to look inwards on how we treat ourselves like a best friend. We have explored self-compassion, so that we can show the same kindness and care we’d give to a good friend. We later inspired the students to write four things they love about themselves on a poster.
Whole:
We asked the students some driving discussion questions:
- Does anyone know what BFF means?
- What does it mean to be a best friend?
- What qualities make someone a really special friend?
We let them know that they are their own best friend. We explained how important it is for them to treat themselves well.
Small: The students were asked to write and draw four things they love about themselves. We used a URSTRONG resource that encourages self-compassion and is presented in an engaging and fun poster.
Whole:
Share and Reflect: To end the session, each student shared one thing that they loved about themselves.
Prompts:
- I would like to introduce you to your new BFF…
- This person is with you every single day, every moment of the day.
- They are by your side always and forever.
- You go through all the ups & downs with them.
- Do you know who this might be?
How you might like to continue learning at home:
- Encourage your child to talk about their strengths
- Provide lots of opportunities for social interactions (Playdates, Parties, Sports etc.)
- Encourage your child to self-reflect
- Discuss four things you love about yourself with your child
- Continue creating safe and happy places for your child.
- Assist your child to build a word bank of emotions by talking about other words that mean the same (sad: upset, blue, down; happy: good, cheerful, jolly )
Kind regards,
Stef, Jarryd and Rosanna
