Inquiry: NEW

Across the last two weeks, the Level 4 students have been uncovering the purpose, importance, and details behind celebrations and commemorations. We have been busily collecting research behind a chosen celebration or commemoration, exploring what these chosen events may stand for, the history of these days, and why there is a token day to respresent certain historical events.

It has been fantastic being able to share with students special celebrations or commemorations they may reference in their own lives, and how our cultural identify, family traditions, and communities all bring about important milestones that we celebrate or pay our respects to. We look forward to continuing on with our investigation of celebrations and commemorations as we start publishing our work creatively.

Literacy

In the upcoming weeks, students will begin to demonstrate their skills and understanding of various literary elements as they engage in narrative and persuasive writing tasks.

We will also be commencing our unit of work on Storm Boy. The main idea of Storm Boy by Colin Thiele is about the deep bond between a boy and a pelican, set against the backdrop of the South Australian coast. It explores themes of friendship, loss, and the connection between humans and nature. Through the story of Storm Boy and his pelican, Mr Percival, the book highlights the importance of compassion, growing up, and the impact of relationships on a young person's life.

This term, Level 4 students have been exploring morphology – the study of how words are formed and how they work. We've focused on breaking words into prefixes, suffixes, and base words to better understand their meanings. By learning about common word parts like "un-", "re-", and "-ful", students are becoming more confident in decoding unfamiliar words and improving their spelling and vocabulary. This foundational knowledge supports their reading and writing across all areas of the curriculum.

Numeracy:

To kick off Maths in Term 2, Level 4 students have been developing their understanding of decimals by learning to identify, represent and write tenths in decimal format. They’ve been exploring how tenths relate to fractions and the number system through hands-on activities and visual models. In addition, students are learning about time—focusing on units such as seconds, minutes and hours. These foundational skills support their growing confidence in working with both number and measurement concepts.
