Literacy

In Literacy we are continuing to learn about the Etymology of words which is the origin of how words were formed. The students are finding this aspect of literacy fascinating and there have been excellent discussions pertaining to the history of words. We are also learning about personification, metaphors and similes and how these skills can enhance and make writing more interesting. We are continuing to practise our oral reading with the daily Fluency Pairs in the classroom. At home, please make sure your child is reading out aloud to a family member a few times per week.

Additionally, students are now using dictionaries to look up the meaning of unfamiliar words and then writing these words in sentences to convey understanding. In Grammar, we are learning about the spelling rule 'the letter 'o' followed by the letter 'm' and the letter 'n' in a word makes a 'u' sound'. For example, money, son, won, come and company. During our Core Literacy time we are learning about the root word 'bi' meaning 'life'. We are learning to add prefixes and suffixes to create different words. Eg: bi= life + ist (noun) = biologist (scientist who specialises in the study of life).

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about Prime Numbers, Composite Numbers, factors and Fact Families. This is a lot of mathematical information for the students to comprehend, however, with practise, they are understanding these concepts better with each maths session. Additionally, we are also learning about the Base 10 system which is the decimal number system and that each group of numbers generally increases/ decreases by groups of 10. Students are also learning to work out how many groups of 10s, 100s, 1000s and 10000s there are in specific numbers. Finally, the students have commenced learning their 4 x tables.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, the students are learning about geography, resources and sustainability.  We have started to learn about rocks - igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. We are also learning about what sustainability looks like  and how we can contribute towards reusing,  reducing and recycling.

In 2023 Ch 10 screened a series about the First Inventors. It is a facinating watch if you can access 10Play https://10play.com.au/the-first-inventors/episodes/season-1/episode-1/tpv230613trzpj

GEM Chat - Discuss how you are feeling about learning the new literacy and maths concepts in Term 2.

We have started to look at ways to relax and meditate when we are feeling worried or concerned about parts of our lives.
