Foundation: Connect

Term 1 2025

Reminder: Hats for recess and lunch times.

Welcome to Term 2

Dear Foundation Families,

We have a few  reminders that we would like to share;

  • 2 x Take home books will be sent home each Monday and returned the following Monday. Please record any reading in your child's diary by writing the book title in the space provided in the school diary. We ask that each night you spend some time reading with your child. Additionally, a fluency sheet will be included either weekly or fortnightly.
  • SEPS Academy will be starting in the coming weeks. This consists of students attending a group that they selected based on their interests at the end of Term 1. This will take place on the opposite Friday afternoon to Communities.

Learning

Students had immense fun at our maths incursion! See some photos below!

We have been learning about different emotions using the phrase 'I notice... I feel... and I can...' statements. Ask your child after school the emotion they felt the most to describe their day.

Numeracy

Over the past two weeks in Maths, students have been introduced to the concept of subtraction. To build a strong understanding, they began by exploring this concept using manipulatives, which helped bring the idea to life in a concrete way. From there, they progressed to using hands-on materials with numbers sentences to deepen their understanding and build confidence. This foundation naturally led into exploring the part-part-whole relationship, supporting their number sense and understanding of how numbers work together.

To consolidate their learning, students revisited addition strategies, including Friends of 10, through a fun and engaging craft activity. It’s been wonderful to see students making meaningful connections between subtraction and addition through playful and purposeful learning.

Literacy

Students are rapidly consolidating their alphabet letter names and sounds. In week 4 we will learn our final sound of the alphabet 'qu'. Students will learn that 'u' always follows 'q' and that they are 'best friends' as they stick together. We have also been reviewing our most recent letters learnt of 'w, e, x, k, y, z'.

We are still learning the heart words 'are' and 'for' and will move onto 'you'. Heart words are essential for students reading and writing success so feel free to practise them at home as they are on the back of the reading fluency list.

Students are beginning to have success writing their own sentences which is lovely to see. They are connecting their sounds learnt to write basic sentences. We are focusing on writing the sounds we hear in conjunction with their knowledge of heart words. Students are encouraged to always use their letter chart to assist. Students are learning to ensure they include the who, what and where in their sentence to make it more interesting.

Fairytales are still being explored with our next one being 'Little Red Riding Hood'.

Inquiry and Fire Brigade Visit

This term we have been exploring the Inquiry unit 'Who We Are'. We are delving into what are own families are like, the roles we play in our families and will start to explore our own and others roles in the community. Therefore, we are SUPER excited to have the Fire Brigade visiting us to learn about fire safety. Please see the dates below.

  • Friday 23rd May 11:30am - Fire Safety
  • Friday 30th May 11:30am - Fire Truck visit

Library

Students were super excited to commence our library sessions and are treating the library with care. In order to borrow a book students must return their 'old' library book (preferably on their library day) and bring a library bag.
