The importance of books to support Literacy learning
The Victorian Department of Education mandates that all Victorian public schools implement systematic synthetic phonics for Prep-Year 2 students. This approach involves explicit instruction on the relationship between sounds and letters, with 25 minutes of daily phonics instruction. Systematic synthetic phonics is a core component of a comprehensive reading program that includes oral language, vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension.
To support this work, we need "Decodable books". Such books are specially designed reading materials that align with the phonics skills. They use simple words that follow predictable spelling-sound rules, making them ideal for beginning readers, especially those in early phonics instruction or those who struggle with reading eg. dyslexia. Key Features of Decodable Books are:
- Phonics-based that include words with spelling patterns the reader has been explicitly taught.
- Controlled vocabulary where the student can decode or has learned as high-frequency "sight words."
We are currently exploring the variety of decodable books on the market and selecting what best suits our students.
Through the generosity of fundraising events at LPS, such as the recent Colour Run in Term 1, we thank the PFA for their hard work and dedication in supporting the students' Literacy learning. The initial investment of $10,000 from such successful fundraising efforts is very much appreciated and we are grateful for the unwavering support of the PFA.
EDUCATION WEEK 2025: Celebration of Cultures
Education Week is an annual celebration of public education in Victoria.
In 2025, Victoria will celebrate Education Week from Monday 19 May to Friday 23 May.
All children deserve a place to learn and thrive in. This year’s theme Celebration of Cultures highlights the diversity of our communities and the importance of every child feeling safe and welcome at school.
Welcome to Parents
To celebrate education week at LPS we are delighted to invite you to a special
Morning Session in Our Classrooms at LPS, where you’ll have the opportunity to step into your child’s learning environment and experience a glimpse of their school day in action.
Date: Wednesday 21st May
Time: 9 – 9.45amLocation: Your child’s classroom (please note your child may have a specialist lesson during this time. Your child’s teacher will let you know beforehand).
This is a wonderful chance to engage with our teaching and learning practices, observe how your child interacts with peers and teachers, and become even more connected to our vibrant school community.
We hope you will join us for this enriching experience. Your presence makes a meaningful difference!
Safety is led by adults
Unfortunately we are still experiencing dangerous behaviours by students, visitors and families relative to bikes and scooters in the school grounds. It is imperative that the following rules are abided to, to ensure the safety of everyone.
- Helmets must be worn at all times.
- Students are not allowed to ride their bikes or scooters within the school grounds.
- Students are not allowed to walk into the school via the staff car park gates. They are to walk to the nearest student gate, which is where the bike shed is.
Student Leaders represent with Pride
Friday 25th March, the school captains and SRC chairs represented LPS at the ANZAC Day ceremony in Cranbourne. The student leaders were extremely excited to be bestowed this honour and did so with great pride.
ANZAC Day is an important national day in Australia and New Zealand that commemorates the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915, during World War I. For students, attending ANZAC Day ceremonies or participating in school events related to it holds significant educational and cultural value.
Importance of Students Attending ANZAC Day:
- Honouring Sacrifice and Service
- Learning National History
- Fostering National Identity and Unity
- Encouraging Civic Responsibility
- Passing the Torch of Remembrance
With fewer veterans alive each year, it becomes increasingly important for younger generations to take up the responsibility of remembering and honouring the past.
Celebrating Connection Cultures
LPS implements a variety of cultural and events, celebrating the diverse celebrations. At LPS, our enrollment data helps us select events to acknowledge and share with students, however the events/celebrations listed are in no way a true reflection of all the worldly events, celebrations and special days. Of note:
- The world's major religions account for over 77% of the global population, including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.
- Other significant religions include Judaism, Sikhism, Taoism, Jainism, Shinto, and various folk religions.
- In Australia, the major religions, based on the 2021 census, are Christianity (43.9%), followed by "no religion" (38.9%), Islam (3.2%), Hinduism (2.7%), and Buddhism (2.4%).
