Yayoi Kusama…

                                                and her playful polka dots!

In art this term Year 6 students have looked at the artwork of Japanese-born artist Yayoi Kusama – ‘the one who loves the polka dots’. They saw photos of her exhibition earlier this year at the NGV in Melbourne and heard from students who had been to the gallery to experience her work. We discussed the purpose of her big, bright, colourful and interactive artworks and were left with a whiteboard full of reasons why people create art.

Here are some of their ideas:

  • To bring joy to others,
  • To share stories or ideas,
  • For therapy,
  • To earn money,
  • For decoration, and
  • To spread messages.

The artwork they created in the style of Yayoi Kusama had a particular focus on bringing joy to others. They experimented with a range of ways to make dots on paper. They used contrasting colours for constructing their flowers and thought about balance and layout in their finished pieces. They further embellished their works with small three-dimensional additions.

These beautiful flowers are now on display in the multipurpose room for everyone to enjoy. We hope they brighten your day!
