During Literacy we have finalised our learning about summarising. We have learned different ways to summarise fiction and non fiction texts. We have also learned to identify the main idea of the text and three supporting details in a text. The main idea is usually the topic sentence and the supporting details are sprinkled throughout the paragraph. Have a look at this passage and see if you can find the main idea and supporting details.

Gold can be used to make many different things. This is because it is soft and easy to bend. Gold can be made into jewellery and coins. Medals at the Olympics are even made out of gold. Gold can be used in electronics such as phones and computers. Dentists can even use gold when repairing teeth.
During Numeracy, we have looked at addition and practised using a variety of strategies to solve problems such as the split, jump and compensation strategy.

Split strategy - Split the numbers in parts (tens and ones), (hundreds, tens and ones)
Jump strategy - Use an open number line to jump by tens and ones
Compensation strategy - Make friendlier numbers by rounding to the nearest 10
This term we have been investigating the events that occured during the Gold Rush. We have looked at a range of information (article, books, videos) to help us understand what life was like in the 1800s in Victoria. We have learned about what gold is, where is was found, and who came to Ballarat to try their luck at searching for gold.
EXCURSION - We will be attending Sovereign Hill on Thursday 5th of June. Please check compass for payment and consent.
This week we participated in a STEM incursion (Electrical Buzz). We learned where electricity comes from and what things are powered by it. We also learned about renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. We used globes, wires and batteries to make circuits and played with snap circuits to power, propellers, alarms and lights.
