The Liceo Blaise Pascal Exchange

At the end of Term 3, from 4 September to 20 September, our school had the pleasure of hosting six students from Liceo Blaise Pascal in Pomezia, Italy. These students were warmly welcomed into the homes of families with students from Years 10, 11, and 12, becoming part of our school community and sharing in daily life both in and out of the classroom.

Throughout their stay, the Italian students attended classes alongside their Australian peers. From navigating new subjects to joining in extra-curricular activities, they quickly integrated and formed strong bonds with our students, learning as much about Australian school life as they did about Australian culture.

A thank you goes to the host families who graciously opened their homes and hearts, offering the students an unforgettable homestay experience and to the teachers who welcomed them into their classrooms. The warmth, generosity, and hospitality shown to our guests have left a lasting impression, and they return home with many stories, new friendships, and a deeper appreciation of life here in Australia.

The impact of such an exchange is mutual; our students benefited greatly, gaining insight into Italian language and culture, and developing friendships that will last a lifetime.

Below are recounts of the exchange as told by our host students.

Since I arrived here in Australia, everyone has been very welcoming and has complimented my English. My host family has been very kind to me and made me feel at home. One thing that really shocked me is definitely the prices, which are very high, but this is justified by the quality of life. Everyone here is much more relaxed compared to us, and the salaries are high. During this time, I have matured a lot, and I can’t wait to tell everyone about my trip.

In Italia, porterò molti vestiti.
So far, I have liked everything about Australia, but my favourite experience was going with Marco and my friends to Luna Park. What surprised me the most about Australia is the school system, as it is very free and without restrictions (in terms of what is studied). The experience with my host family has been very positive, and they have been very kind to me. I’ll be bringing back a lot of clothes to Italy.

My favourite experience was visiting Sydney and discovering the traditions of the island and my host family. It was an unforgettable experience. The culture, school, and lifestyle are very different from those in Italy, but what surprised me the most was the culture of sleep. In Italy, we sleep 6 to 8 hours, while here it’s a minimum of 10 or 11 hours. I will carry many fantastic people in my heart when I return to Italy, as well as the Australian (and Portuguese) culture that I am now in love with. Thank you for the hospitality!

Since I arrived here in Australia, I have had a lot of fun. The experience that impressed me the most and was the most enjoyable was the day on the boat. I had a great time and saw things that I would never have seen in Italy, like the beauty of the landscape and the vastness of Sydney. What surprised me the most about Australian culture is that people go around barefoot, and that there are no girls at school. The family, on the other hand, is like an Italian family. When I return to Italy, I will take with me new things, like having improved my language skills and learned a new culture.

Since having arrived in Australia, the one thing that impressed me the most was how clean and modern the city is, but also the kindness and respect people have for each other. Initially, I wasn’t really excited about this trip as during the week I had to go to school and the first weekend Marlo had a lot to do, and he couldn’t take me anywhere. However, the second weekend we were asked by Claudio to go on the boat with him and Riley and it was probably the best experience I had here. We saw the coast which was much higher and more spectacular than the Italian one. When they told me that I had to live three weeks with an unknown family, I wanted to cancel the trip but fortunately Marlo’s family was amazing and Marlo is a really funny and smart guy.

So far here in Australia, I have had a very good experience. My favourite experience was when I went for brunch with Simone because it was new for me, as we don’t do brunch in Italy. What surprised me the most is the fact that people have dinner very early. The school is very different from ours because it’s all boys, and you have to change classrooms for every lesson.
