Year 1 & 2
Around our level
A highlight of our year so far has certainly been our Year 1 Milo and Movie Night and Year 2 Sleepover. For some students, it was the first time that they had been away from their parents overnight. To see their faces when they woke in the morning was amazing, as they were so proud of themselves for staying the night. Year 1 students enjoyed staying up later than their normal bedtime, watching a movie, playing games, then going home once it was dark.
1/2A: Excerpts from students’ recounts of the night
Ella M: For the movie we watched Secret Life Of Pet’s. Then we got ready for bed. I struggled to get to sleep because everyone was talking so much! Finally everyone went to sleep. In the morning I woke up bright and early. I felt nice and fresh. Another new day I thought.
Toby S: We played a game where we sat in a circle, one person tapped someone's head and they chased each other. It was called Duck Duck Goose. I got to go home because I didn't want to sleep at school.
Harvey W: It took a long time to for the grade 2s to fall asleep but they finally did. I woke up at 3:00 because my sleeping bag was too hot! But then I went back to sleep.
1/2B wrote a recount as a class:
On Thursday 17th October we had the Milo and Movie night and Grade 2 Sleepover.
The Year 1 and 2 students sat down and Mrs Pfander talked to us and pressed play on the movie. We watched ‘The Secret Life of Pets’. Halfway through we paused the movie and had milo and biscuits and fruit. Then we went back to the movie and watched a little bit more and some of us coloured in some colouring sheets.
At 8.30 the Grade 1 students walked with Miss Stevens to the gym to meet their parents. They saw their parents and went home to bed!
The Grade 2 students watched a little bit more of the movie and then brushed their teeth, got in their pyjamas and went to bed.
1/2C wrote a class recount also. Here is some of it:
On Thursday 17 October, Year 1 had a Movie and Milo Night and Year 2 had a sleepover in the BER. We got there at 6:30. When we arrived the Year 2s set up their beds and the Yr 1s played games in the gym. We played Line Tiggy, Infinity Tag, Duck Duck Goose (with silly names like Kree and Bongo), Grandma’s Undies and Octopus.
In the BER we played Detective, Heads Down, Thumbs Up, Dead Fish and a Brain Break. After we played our games we watched a movie called Secret Life of Pets. It was about two dogs named Max and Duke who got caught by animal control and a rabbit saved them!
Reading in 1/2C:
Paula comes in to 1/2C to help each Wednesday and today she read the book, “Peregrines in the City”, with a group of students. Those students shared what they had learnt with the grade.
Hudson D: Their nest is at 367 Collins Street and they lay eggs there every year. Sometimes the eggs do not hatch.
Paityn E: They eat pigeons and lorikeets.
Lucy S: They sit on their eggs so they stay nice and warm. If the eggs get cold they do not hatch. The chicks stay close together to stay warm.
Jett T: They lay their eggs in a nesting box full of gravel high up at the side of a skyscraper.
Archer T: The males can dive down faster than any other animal in the world. The male is called a tiercel.
William S: The male is smaller than the female.
Tree Planting Day
Last week we also planted trees in our sanctuary. For some of us, it was the first time we took a plant out of a pot, dug a hole, and placed it gently into the ground. Miss Ross then watered them after school. We will be able to watch our plants grow over the years.
For Reading and Writing lessons, students have continued to explore Bob Graham books and write responses. Students have also been learning about pronouns in their writing. In Maths lessons students have been learning about sharing into groups with and without leftovers for division. Students have started learning about mass and weighing objects using scales. Students have this week started revising their learning about Time. In Integrated Studies, students have been learning about special places and how to look after special places. They have also been exploring sustainability and how to recycle items in the right bins. For Wellbeing, students have been exploring personal strengths.
