Leading Teachers Report
Beginning Of Term 4
To the South Oakleigh College community There’s a definite smell of spring in the air as our students and teachers embark on the final Term of the school year.
We started this term with a Junior School assembly during which our Year Level Leaders revisited our college values of High Expectations, Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Teamwork.
We also reviewed key dates during Term 4 including the upcoming exam period, where all students in Years 7 and 8 will undertake a one-hour exam in English, Maths, Humanities and Science. Being organised is an important part of achieving success at school and we talked about some techniques to keep this time of year as stress free as possible. It is also an exciting time of the year where students will start planning for the end of year activities and start looking towards the Step Up program following our exams and exam feedback.
This week our Year 7 students have been visiting the Monash Tech School located at Monash University to take part in the Cybersafe program. This one-day program gives students valuable insight into how organisations combat cyber-attacks and provide security for their employees and customers. We are fortunate to have this amazing resource so close to our school.
Year 7 students were immersed in a day of wellbeing activities. Thanks must go to our Year 7 Leader Ms Hoernel and the Wellbeing team for organising activities which included presentations on screen addiction and from the Black Dog institute. A thoroughly worthwhile and informative day of activities.
A reminder that all students should now be wearing the summer uniform and that blazers must be worn to and from school.

As we near the end of the year, it's incredible to see how far our Middle School students have come. Soon, our Year 9 students will be stepping up to Year 10, and our Year 10s are preparing for exciting new paths—whether it's VCE, VCE-VM, TAFE, or entering the workforce. But before those milestones, there’s one final focus: exam preparation. Our exam period begins on Monday 11 November, and we’re here to support students every step of the way.
We know this can be a challenging time, but with a balanced approach, students can succeed both academically and personally. Here are some strategies to help them finish the year strong:
1. Master your Time Management
Creating a study schedule can be a game-changer. Encourage students to block out study times after school and on weekends, but don’t forget the breaks! Short, regular breaks help maintain focus, prevent burnout, and allow time for other activities.
2. Work as a Team
Study groups can be incredibly effective. When students discuss topics with their peers, they reinforce their own understanding and gain new perspectives. Remind them that homework help sessions are available afterschool, and teachers are always here to support them!
3. Set Clear, Achievable Goals
Encourage students to set specific targets that motivate them. They can ask themselves: What do I want to achieve? What steps will I take to get there? Working toward these goals will help them stay focused and driven.
Finding Balance: Keys to a Healthy Exam Season
Academic success is essential, but maintaining a balanced lifestyle is equally important. Here are some ways to help students manage stress and stay energised:
Regular Exercise:
Physical activity, like walking, jogging, swimming or team sports, is a fantastic way to recharge both mind and body.
Healthy Eating & Adequate Sleep:
A nutritious diet and enough sleep (aim for 8-9 hours each night) are vital for focus, memory, and overall well-being. Ensure that you are heading to bed at a reasonable time!
Mindfulness & Relaxation: Techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or even short breaks can help students manage stress. Finding what works for them can make a real difference.
Screen Time Limits:
While tech is a great learning tool, set boundaries for social media and entertainment to avoid burnout and improve sleep quality.
Above all, we encourage students to balance their academic pursuits with their personal lives. Aim high but remember that reaching out for help is a sign of strength. Our dedicated teachers and support staff are here to assist every step of the way.
We believe in our students’ potential and look forward to seeing all they accomplish. To our Year 9 and 10 students, best of luck with exams. With hard work, focus, and a balanced approach, you can achieve your goals!

It is a busy time for all students.
Students preparing for VCE 3/4 exams, must go through exam navigator to check exam expectations.
Students must make sure all allowed materials are arranged before exams.
Students studying VCE units 1/2 must take feedback to prepare well for end of year exams.
Students who filled up expressions of interest for Special Provision VCE units 3/4 2025 end of year exam will be sent communications in week 4. If by the end of week 4 parents and students interested in availing special provisions do not receive any communication from a Senior School team member, they are required to contact Ms. Ferguson via email: jessica.ferguson3@education.vic.gov.au
