CURRICULUM

📚 Phonemic awareness: reading and phonics

Students will complete two UFLI sessions this week (4 lessons and an assessment).

Students will learn to read and spell words with open and closed syllables, and learn the grapheme 'tch'. They will read decodable words, phrases and texts. They will also review the following heart words: woman, women

And learn the heart words: many, any, been, into, friend, because

 

What can you do at home?

-Assist your child to read their 'take home' book each night 

-Help your child learn to read and spell their Heart Words 

-Explore the Reading Eggs library and Fast Phonics to read decodable texts

-Continue to revise sounds on the sound/letter ring

📝 Literature: reading responses and writing 

The mentor text is Elmer and Grandpa Eldo. Students will use this text to form the basis of their literary responses, such as making text to self connections and comparing what is the same and what is different with our own grandparents. 

Students will continue to practise handwriting formations on dotted thirds writing paper. 

 

What can you do at home?

-Reinforce correct entry and exit points for letters if your child writes at home

-Provide authentic opportunities for your child to write at home eg. writing birthday cards, shopping lists and keeping score in games.

 

🔢  Maths 

Students will explore the concept of graphing. They will explore graphs other than pictographs such as column, bar and tally graphs. They will collect, sort and graph their own information that they have collected and answer simple questions about the graph. 

Mathematical vocabulary used: data, graph, compare, question, display, create, column, bar, tally, category, collect

 

What can you do at home?

-Continue to read numbers in your environment

-Practise writing numbers at home, ensuring that numbers are not reversed! 

 

🌏 CBL - Curiosity

We have paused CBL rotations for this week so that we can prepare for Grandparents Day. Students will be using CBL time to make a special card for their grandparents.
