THE IMPORTANCE OF ROUTINES FOR CHILDREN

As we move through the school year, establishing and maintaining consistent daily routines plays a vital role in supporting children’s learning, wellbeing, and behaviour.

Children thrive on predictability. Clear routines help them feel safe, secure, and confident because they know what to expect. This sense of stability allows them to better manage their emotions, stay organised, and focus on learning at school.

Consistent routines support children to:

  • Develop independence and responsibility

  • Build positive habits for learning

  • Reduce anxiety and challenging behaviours

  • Improve concentration and readiness for school

Simple routines such as preparing school bags the night before, having regular mealtimes, and setting aside time for reading or homework can make a significant difference to a child’s day.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP

One of the most important routines for primary school children is a consistent bedtime.

Sleep is essential for brain development, memory, emotional regulation, and overall health. Without enough sleep, children may struggle to concentrate, manage their feelings, and engage positively with others.

As a general guide:

  • Children aged 5–7 years typically need 10–11 hours of sleep per night

  • Children aged 8–12 years typically need 9–11 hours of sleep per night

A regular bedtime and wake-up time (even on weekends) helps establish a healthy sleep pattern.

TIPS FOR A SMOOTH BEDTIME

To support your child in getting enough quality sleep:

  • Set a consistent bedtime each night

  • Create a calm and predictable wind-down routine (e.g. reading a book)

  • Limit screen time at least one hour before bed

  • Ensure bedrooms are quiet, dark, and comfortable

  • Encourage your child to pack their school bag and prepare for the next day before bedtime

By establishing strong routines at home, you are giving your child the best possible foundation for success at school. Consistency between home and school helps children feel confident, settled, and ready to learn each day.
