LEISURE EDUCATION

Year 10 elective ‘Leisure Education – Active for Life’ is a practical and theoretical insight into the role of leisure and recreational pursuits for a range of different groups within the community. It also provides students with the opportunity to gain practical knowledge in a wide variety of leisure-based activities which they could choose to pursue. One of the most pleasing aspects of this subject is the partnerships which are built with various community organisations and the associated positive learning outcomes for our students.

Over the past few weeks, students in Leisure Education have been given the opportunity to learn about the importance of physical activity for people living with a disability. In conjunction with some empowering videos and documentaries featuring Dylan Alcott and the Australian Wheelchair Basketball Team, students have gained practical experience learning about Paralympic Sports such as Wheelchair Basketball and Goalball.

Last term, on Tuesday the 31st of March, former Paralympian and Wheelchair AFL player Peter Ogunyemi gave our students a dynamic and interactive experience whilst gaining valuable insights into living with a disability. The key message from Peter was to embrace your differences and make sure to always give things a go and never give up!

This term, on Tuesday the 28th of April, Daniel Pritchard from Exsight Sports provided an incredible experience for our students whilst playing Goalball and being able to experience what life might be like without vision. Daniel used his incredible knowledge as an Australian Goalball athlete to lead this empowering session, whilst ensuring the students were supported every step of the way.

These practical experiences have allowed our students to learn about how athletes living with a disability continue to break down barriers and achieve success in their life pursuits, as well as the importance of sport and recreation in your life and its ability to connect you with your community and build meaningful relationships with those around you.
