Prep A students have been making fantastic progress in English as they begin their literacy journey through the InitiaLit program. Over the past few weeks, students have been developing their phonological awareness through a range of engaging word games and activities.
Students have been learning to listen carefully to the sounds in words and how those sounds connect to letters. So far, the class has been introduced to the sounds /m/, /s/, /t/, /a/, /p/, /i/, /f/ and /r/ and have been practising linking these sounds to the letters m, s, t, a, p, i, f, r during our handwriting sessions.
Reyansh shared, “We learn about the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. So far we have learnt m, s, t, a, p, i, f, r”
Students have been exploring how words are made up of different sounds. As Iva explained, “The teacher says the sound in words like /t/ /a/ /p/ and then we put it together and clap ‘tap!’”
We have also been practising handwriting, focusing on correct letter formation and neat presentation. Shayan proudly said, “We have completed some handwriting. I now know how to write m, s and t very neatly!” Rian added, “We trace on the letter and then have a turn by ourselves.”
Students are also learning about the characters that represent different sounds in InitiaLit. Arjun explained, “We learnt about /m/ and Maggie Mouse and /s/ Sammy Seal.”
Phonological awareness games have been a highlight for the class.
Sankalpa shared, “We learnt about clapping our syllables. /San/ /kal/ /pa – my name has three syllables.”
Lina explained one of our favourite games: “We play thumbs up and thumbs down. If the teacher says a word that starts with /s/ we put our thumbs up. If it doesn’t we put our thumbs down.”
Students have also been exploring rhyming words, with Lyla sharing, “We learnt about rhyming words like ‘cat’ and ‘mat’.”
Through hands-on activities, students are also building their understanding of beginning sounds. Aadi explained, “We do cutting and pasting to help us know what begins with /s/ and /m/.”
Alongside phonics learning, the class has been enjoying rich storybook experiences.
Ruhi shared, “We learn how to read words.” Riyon added, “We learnt about words in storybooks.” During a recent read-aloud, Ansh noticed interesting vocabulary, saying, “The teacher read the book How to Catch a Star, we looked at the words ‘wished’ and ‘carefully’.”
We are incredibly proud of the progress Prep A students have already made. Their enthusiasm and participation during InitiaLit lessons are helping them build strong foundations for reading and writing.
