Inquiry - What might history teach us about building resilient communities?

This term in level 5 we have been learning about Australian History to explore how history can teach us about resilient communities.

The students have researched about events such as the Gold Rush in Ballarat and the Eureka Stockade that helped to improve working conditions for the gold miners. We have also researched into the life of the infamous bush ranger, Ned Kelly, and how his story can teach us about equity and resilience.

Through learning about these historic events, the students have had the opportunity to create numerous learning transfers which includes posters, diary entries, and even a role play! They were able to join with 5F and create a short role play of the events that led up to the events of the Eureka Stockade, as well as the improvements that were made afterwards because of the rebellion. The students collated all of their research about Ned Kelly both in class, and through Home Learning, into a newspaper style poster that is displayed inside our classroom.

Here are some reflections the students have said about our learning this Term:

“The gold rush is when a lot of people came from another country to Australia and they heard gold was very expensive and they like gold.” – Peter 5E

“The Eureka Stockade was all about the taxes, I thought it started because of a war but it wasn't. It only lasted 15 minutes." – Hasiru 5E

"I learnt more about the burning of the fire and the anti-Chinese laws. The anti-Chinese laws meant the chinses people weren't allowed to come and live in Australia.” – Klarissa 5E
