Digital Technologies

Year Eight

It’s been fantastic to see out students successfully manage the design thinking process and 3D printing their digitally designed objects. We look forward to joining with Mrs McAllister’s Year Ten Hospitality class next term to bake scones with our cutters!

Year Ten Applied Digital Technologies

Our students are rocketing along in this VET course, demonstrating competency in a range of areas from communications to work health and safety. We are now onto understanding computer hardware and operating systems – pulling computers apart, putting them back together, troubleshooting that process and then exploring how industry standard operating systems function and are installed – from Windows to macOS and Linux distros!

Hospitality Electives

Year Seven

Our Baudin students have been busy in the kitchen this term, exploring apple varieties to create low‑fat muffins using apple sauce, transforming soft bananas into quick pikelets, and turning leftovers into beautifully presented stuffed spuds featuring all five food groups. Next week, they’ll continue the theme of reducing food waste by making a nourishing pizza using whatever ingredients are on hand to craft something delicious.

Year Eight

To wrap up our learning on the importance of eating a variety of foods from the five food groups, students explored the protein group by making a budget‑friendly spaghetti bolognese packed with vegetables, then shifted their focus to why a good breakfast matters by cooking and tasting a range of quick, grab‑and‑go morning meals. They’ve now completed their designs for the exciting Breakfast Boss Challenge, and with food orders submitted, they’re eagerly preparing to cook and serve their very own breakfasts.

Year Nine

After camp week, students explored how yeast works in dough by creating a variety of pizza bases topped with a classic Margherita blend, then compared their homemade versions with both takeaway and supermarket pizzas while examining nutrition and sustainability. To finish the term, they designed their own high‑fibre pizzas using the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, and after the delicious aroma of next week’s pizza cook‑off fills the kitchen, they’ll head into Easter enjoying how to make quick, easy, non‑yeast hot cross buns.

Year Ten

In the second half of this term, students have been busy designing their own recipes using vegetables grown in our kitchen garden, dehydrating chives for a Cheese and Chive Scone Mix and a variety of produce—including beans, celery, corn, spring onions, zucchini, and tomatoes—for a hearty dry soup blend, all of which they trialled for flavour and cooking time. Next term they will package their “Soup and Scones” product, with other Technologies classes collaborating to create laser‑cut scone cutters, a website, and a wooden presentation box—an excellent example of cross‑curricular learning in action.

Certificate II Hospitality

Year Eleven

The class continues to impress with their growing kitchen skills, finishing the term by preparing and serving a variety of professional‑looking sandwiches including open sandwiches, grilled wraps, filled focaccias, and pressed creations. Looking sharp in their chef uniforms, students are also gaining an understanding of industry standards and the professionalism expected in real kitchen environments.

Year Twelve

This fabulous group of students proudly represented our school at the Tides of Taste function, working both front and back of house alongside well‑known chefs to serve 200 guests at the stunning Maitraya Private Retreat overlooking Nanarup Beach. More recently, they put their newly practised espresso‑making skills to work by running a pop‑up coffee stand at the Gate2Plate Field Day, serving students from Agricultural Colleges, farmers, and exhibitors and having a fantastic day doing it. They followed up the next evening, serving hot chocolate and espresso to staff, students and parents at the VET Show.

Sustainable Production

Year Seven

The Year Seven Mokare garden is flourishing with the rain. Many students took home radishes, lettuces and cucumbers today. Some coriander and dill had gone to seed at the end of the year in this plot, so we have massive amounts of both germinating! The students helped me relocate the compost bins today in preparation for the chooks to move to the next area of the garden.

Year Eight

The Year Eight Sustainable Garden class has continued to make great progress in our garden space, with students now having planted their summer plants and focusing on maintaining and caring for their garden beds. Throughout this process, students have learnt valuable lessons about plant growth, sustainability and the realities of gardening, including that not all seedlings survive.

It has been fantastic to see students working collaboratively in their groups, taking responsibility for their spaces and developing a deeper understanding of sustainable agriculture practices. As we move towards the end of term, students are now beginning to prepare for and plant their autumn seeds, applying the knowledge and skills they have built over the past eight weeks.

Design and Technology - Woodwork

Year Eight

The Year Eight students have made a fantastic start to the year and have shown impressive progress throughout the semester while working on their jewellery boxes. The project involves three main stages. The first is the planning phase, where students research different joining methods and explore how timber can be cut and shaped to make these joints possible. The second stage is the construction of the box itself, which requires careful measurement, accuracy and a series of well‑executed steps to ensure a high‑quality final product. The final stage, which will take place soon, is a reflection process where students evaluate their work, consider what went well and identify what could be improved in future projects.

Design and Technology

Our  students across Years Seven to Eleven have continued to build momentum in the workshop, refining their practical skills and design thinking as they progress through their projects. Year Seven students have just completed their keepsake boxes and are finishing off the term by wrapping up their portfolios, taking great pride in their final pieces.

Year Nine students have successfully constructed their folding camping picnic tables and are currently waiting for the school’s laser cutter to be installed. Once this is in place, they will personalise their tables with their own designs before applying finishes and taking them home. They have also begun designing their next project, side tables, in preparation for next term.

Year Ten students are continuing to work through the construction of their dartboard cabinets, showing increasing confidence with tools and workshop processes. Meanwhile, our Year Eleven students have moved into the construction phase of their upholstered footstools after completing their design work and are now actively bringing their ideas to life in the workshop.

It has been great to see students developing independence, problem-solving skills and a strong sense of pride in their work as they continue to build their capabilities.
