Speech Pathology at Croydon SDS
At Croydon SDS, the Speech Pathologists are Natalie, Julie and Philippa. They work with teachers, Education Support staff and students to build student communication and mealtime skills.
Many students at Croydon SDS are not able to communicate using speech alone. They use communication systems like apps, devices and PODD books to help them understand and be understood. These are often called AAC systems (Alternative and Augmentative Communication systems).
When a student can communicate more effectively, they find it easier to understand the curriculum. Their progress can also be measured more accurately.
It is helpful to know that children don’t stop developing speech if they use an AAC system. Sometimes AAC even helps speech develop more quickly!
If your child has an AAC system, consider sending it into school every day. If your child doesn’t have one, you may like to find out more about AAC.
We will be hosting a meeting with Helen Tainsh next term to provide more information about AAC. Please see the flyer in this newsletter.
Croydon SDS Speech Pathologists also help students to eat and drink safely. Every student has a Mealtime Protocol to summarise the supports that are needed when they are eating and drinking.
If you would like to discuss your child’s communication or mealtime needs, please contact your child’s teacher and ask to speak with the Speech Pathologists Natalie, Julie or Philippa.
