Year Six

Dear 6 Families,

Students have hit the ground running this term! It has been wonderful to see so many students leading by example, demonstrating our school expectations, and establishing strong classroom routines.

Student Leadership - Applications and Trials

It has been a busy start to Year 6, with students eagerly applying for leadership positions such as House Captain, submitting camp applications, and participating in dance and sports try-outs. Throughout this process, students have embodied our IB Learner Profile attributes—being Risk-Takers by stepping out of their comfort zones, Communicators by expressing themselves clearly and collaborating with others, and Balanced and Caring in handling both successes and disappointments with resilience. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and perseverance!

Parent Information Night

Our Year 6 Parent Information Night was a great success! Classroom teachers shared key information about Saltwater College’s expectations, important dates for the year, and an overview of the curriculum.

We were also fortunate to have John Hendry, our Relationships Consultant, visit classrooms to speak about Relationship-Based Education (RBE). His insights highlighted the crucial role parents play in shaping their child’s education, health, and overall well-being.

Thank you to all parents who attended and took the opportunity to meet their child’s classroom teacher and ask questions. Your engagement is invaluable to your child’s learning journey.

Ready to Learn Plans

Students have started working on their Ready to Learn Plans—personalised strategies designed to help them self-regulate when feeling overwhelmed. With teacher guidance, students have identified de-escalation techniques such as:

🔹 Movement and sensory supports

🔹 Mindfulness activities

🔹 Speaking with a trusted adult

These plans empower students with constructive pathways to manage their emotions while ensuring they always have educator support when needed.

Writer’s Notebook

Our young writers have begun using their

Writer’s Notebook, a space to collect and develop their ideas before beginning the writing process. Think of it as a personal library of thoughts, dreams, and inspirations! Students have started decorating their notebook covers to reflect their unique interests and personalities.

‘The Best Part of Me’ Writing Task

Linking with our Unit of Inquiry and the transdisciplinary theme ‘Who We Are’, students have completed their first writing task:‘The Best Part of Me’. Using their Writer’s Notebook for brainstorming, they practiced descriptive writing to explain why they chose a specific feature of themselves.
