Year Three

Dear Year Three Parents and Guardians,
It has fantastic to see the Year Three students continue to show enthusiasm towards learning and settling into the new school year. Our students have spent the last fortnight completing their first 20 days of school program. Students have explored each of the Learner Profile Attributes and used this to help establish their classroom Essential Agreements which outline their collective expectations of how their classrooms should look, feel and sound. We hope everyone has been enjoying their child/ren coming home and sharing their learning with you.
Our students have done a fantastic job at being adaptable in preparation for NAPLAN commencing in week 7 (March 12th), whilst also showing exemplary behaviour both inside and outside of the room.
Parent Information Night
Our Year 3 Parent Information Night was a great success! Thank you to all the parents who attended and took the opportunity to meet their child’s classroom teacher. Key information about Saltwater College’s expectations, important dates for the year, and an overview of the curriculum was shared on the night.
We were also fortunate to have John Hendry, our Relationships Consultant, visit classrooms to speak about Relationship-Based Education (RBE). His insights highlighted the crucial role parents play in shaping their child’s education, health, and overall well-being.
Reading
In Reading, Year Three students have been establishing independent reading routines and expectations. The cohort has engaged with a variety of texts, with a particular emphasis on the comprehension strategies. Students have been identifying key features of these texts, such as indexes and glossaries in non-fiction, and 'problems and resolutions' in fiction texts. A major focus in Year Three is comprehension, and in the lead-up to NAPLAN, students will be introduced to the ‘QAR’ strategy—Question Answer Relationship—to enhance their skills in answering both literal and inferential questions. Teachers strongly encourage all students to read every night to support their progress.
Writing
In Year Three, writing is a key focus, with students developing their craft by exploring the various elements of narrative writing and finding ways to make our writing more descriptive through the use of vocabulary. Students have been busy exploring the different ways to start a narrative story and have written some entertaining sizzling starts.
Over the next coming weeks, students will revise the structure and begin to explore persuasive devices. Feel free to encourage students at home to persuade you with their most compelling arguments, and don't forget to ask for evidence.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, students have continued to explore Number and Algebra concepts such Place Value and the four main operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through hand-on experiences and engaging in problem solving.
Important Dates
• NAPLAN: 12th March - 24th March
Important Reminders
In Term One, it is required that all students wear their hats during recess and lunch.
• We kindly remind students to remember their wide brim hats must be worn every recess and lunch and ensure they have a full water bottle every day.
• Please ensure iPads are sent to school fully charged.
• Our school day commences at 8:30am and students will be welcomed into the classroom each day from 8.20am, which will give them time to prepare for their day ahead. Any student who arrives after 8.40am must sign in at the office and obtain a late pass.
