Level 3

The past few weeks have been productive in the Level 3 classrooms as we prepare students for NAPLAN. We have continued to get to know each other, focused on the routines of the day and made sure everyone is working well to meet the classroom expectations and school values. Gems have been flying into our jars as we work hard to contribute towards the whole school reward - will it be extra playtime or a movie afternoon?

Literacy

Our reading focus has been all about searching and finding information in fiction and non-fiction texts that we read. We searched in the library for a range of different genres such as fantasy, biography, tall tales and historical fiction. When looking at each genre, we took note of the reason an author wrote the text (Persuade, Inform, Entertain) and their features like maps, diagrams, graphs, illustrations, facts and photographs.

Writing lessons have been around narrative and persuasive, again noticing the different features and structures of each. Students worked as a team to reconstruct two mixed up posters before looking at the key words/phrases that will help students decide whether to write a narrative or persuasive text (NAPLAN writing is likely to be one of the two!) Below are a few examples of the persuasive response to "Animals should not be kept in cages".

Numeracy

We have continued expanding our terrific maths knowledge, working with place value and quick addition strategies, using lots of engaging activities and games. Students enjoyed a game of 'get out of my house' for two players. To make it harder, more dice were used or the board numbers were adjusted. During one afternoon, a small group of students challenged their thinking with a number investigation around odd/even number strings.

Wellbeing

Small groups of students brainstormed the positive and negative emotions that occur in the classroom or playground. These were written inside the body shape and around the body were phrases and drawings of times when these emotions might occur.

Here are the reflections from each group:

#  As a team we accomplished a Friendology person of positive and negative feelings.

#  We were working together as a team. We were drawing, playing and having fun. We wrote a lot of stuff together and we made it really colourful.

#  I liked that we worked together as a team. My group was great and we enjoyed drawing all the pictures. It was fun zhooshing our drawings and decorating.

#  We traced Nicki and had lots of fun! We wrote some emotions inside the traced Nicki and tried our best.

#  Teamwork and having fun. We decided to write about mean and not mean.

#  Really good teamwork. Respected each others ideas. Helped and talked as a group. We had fun!

We also catch up as a cohort for Level 3 sport on Monday afternoons. The students are enjoying playing peg soccer or kickball each week and the teachers get a workout too!

Best wishes to Level 3 for NAPLAN next week. Aim high and do your best!
