Grade 5

Welcome back to our Grade 5 students and families. We are very proud of the way students have returned to BHPS and had such a positive start to the year. A big thank you to you all for making sure students had a smooth transition back to school.
Literacy:
At the beginning of the year, staff enjoyed a Professional Development Day with language and literacy expert, Emina Mclean.
Over the next two weeks, students will be reading and learning about World Lakes. In particular, lakes in South America and North America. To begin preparation for NAPLAN, we will be learning about Narrative texts, using the NAPLAN marking rubric, and students' writing samples to guide our teaching.
Spelling mastery: as part of our spelling instruction during the literacy block, students will complete our spelling mastery programs that target their specific learning needs. Students have been placed into groups within our year 5 and 6 cohorts.
Numeracy:
Our maths programs will follow explicit maths instruction strategies. Our lesson outlines have been formed with evidence-based, best practise.
For the coming fortnight, students will be learning about data representation and interpretation. Our lessons will focus on a range of skills such as creating dot plots, and calculating the mode of a data set.
Inquiry:
This term, our Inquiry unit is based on the theme "Going Global" where students learn about the interconnections between people and environments around the world. During week 3 and 4, students will be learning about the geographic characteristics of Europe.
Key reminders & Dates
Sunsmart: students need to be wearing hats when they are outside at school. They are also welcome to bring their own suncreen and apply themselves during recess and lunch.
Nude Food - Resource Smart School
As part of our commitment to being a ‘resource smart school’, we encourage all students and staff to bring nude food to school as much as possible.
By practising Nude Food across the school, we reduce the amount of packaging and waste we bring to school that ends up in our bins to be sent to landfill.
Nude Food is a fantastic opportunity to educate children about how their actions can impact the environment and their health. Focussing on the positive message of ‘nude food = a healthy body + a healthy planet’. As a school we pride ourselves on reducing our ‘footprint’ and caring about the beautiful environment that we are so lucky to live in.
Stationary: In year 5, students are allowed to bring their own pencil cases and stationary items.
Ocean awareness: students need to bring a hat, sunscreen, towel, bathers/rashie/wetsuit, waterproof bag, and some experience in towel (‘carpark’) changing, as change facilities are either non-existent or very limited.

Thank you to family members for volunteering your time to support us with this program. It is much appreciated and doesn't go unnoticed. We have enough volunteers to ensure we can safely get to and from the beach for the remaining sessions, however; if you would still like to come and enjoy the fun, you are welcome to. We just ask that you have a current WWCC, and sign in at the school office on arrival.
NAPLAN:
-NAPLAN will be conducted this term, between the 12th and 24th of March. A timetable with more specific dates and times for each test will be released closer to the starting date.
-In class, we will be doing a range of tasks, discussions and practise tests to ensure the students feel prepared.
