Year 2 Echidnas and Platypuses
In Year 2, the excitement reached new heights when the classes welcomed a pet stick insect named Genie. The students are eagerly taking turns caring for Genie and learning about her daily needs of fresh leaves and sprays of water. Sometimes she even pops out for a quick visit when we have been working hard! One of the Year Two students was lucky enough to name her as part of a raffle reward system in the first week of school.
Students have been having fun practising their number bonds to ten by playing Go Fish and board games. Their enthusiasm for Mathematics hasn’t stopped there; they have also enjoyed singing the Doubles Rap, which helped them memorise their doubles facts with a catchy tune.
Both classes are looking forward to designing and creating Easter Bunny carriages for the Indi Spheros later this term as part of Digital and Design Technology.
Year 6 Brolgas and Emus
Year 6's have enjoyed a super smooth start to Term 1, 2025. It has certainly been a pleasure to see both the Emu and Brolga students back in full swing and focused on the very best learning opportunities for our last year of primary school.
We have been super busy with loads of brilliant and informative tasks. In English, we have been reading the Bridge to Terabithia, a novel about Jesse and Leslie who create a magical forest in their imaginations. We have completed a variety of activities based on this text, learned new vocabulary, engaged in deep discussions and responded through short burst writing to text related questions.
In Mathematics, we interpreted and compared a range of data displays, including side-by-side column graphs and stem and leaf plots for two categorical variables. We have learned to multiply and divide decimals by the powers of 10. We have found that multiplying and dividing decimal numbers repeatedly by 10 or powers of ten moves the number the corresponding number of places left or right.
In Week 3, we engaged in a Leadership Formation and Retreat Day. We got to reflect about what makes a good leader, the leadership skills we possess and how to enhance and develop these skills. This retreat focused on developing the qualities and traits that Jesus demonstrates in his leadership as a guide for aspiring leaders to follow. Using comic superheroes and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, we explored practical ways to develop leadership qualities.
In Week 4, we participated in a Be an eSafe Kid: Back to School – Truth or Trap? Investigating fake online webinars. We got to investigate and learn about fake information and fake friendships online. We got to develop critical thinking skills to identify misinformation and disinformation.
We are looking forward to many more experiences that will shape wonderful memories of our last year at Saint Helena’s for years to come.
