Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross

This Saturday, September 14th is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. This is a significant feast for us as Catholics, reminding us, as Pope Francis says, that “It is no longer you who carry the cross the cross that carries you; the cross does not crush but exalts you”.

This special feast reminds us that the Cross as a symbol of triumph. It is sometimes difficult for children to understand as it is the Cross which was used to torture Jesus. However, it is a symbol of triumph as Jesus used it to connect us to heaven, to embrace all of humanity and show us the depth of His love.  The Cross is a symbol of God’s love and redemption.

It is important to explain to children that Jesus used the Cross to show His commitment to His mission of love and mercy. This understanding shows us that suffering is part of the human experience, but it does not define God's will for us. Instead, God desires that we embody love and compassion towards others.

It is critical for us to use this special feast an opportunity to teach children to embrace all people and see them beyond their differences. To love one another as Jesus loved us. The Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross serves as a reminder of hope and resilience. Just as Jesus triumphed over death, children should be taught that they can find strength in their faith during difficult times. The Cross is a powerful symbol that inspires courage, joy, and the belief that love ultimately prevails over suffering.

I strongly encourage you to attend mass with your family to celebrate this special feast and discuss the meaning of this special feast at home around the dinner table with your children.

God Bless,
