Mindfulness Centre Newsletter
Here we are again at the end of another term, the perfect time to reflect on what is going well in life and what may need some changes. Over the past few weeks as our students are tiring there has been an increase in friendship fires and tricky situations. It is also the time of year where many friendships, particularly in our senior years, are starting to change. If your child is having some friendship challenges, the holidays may be the perfect time for some conversations.
Using our Friendology language you could:
- Inquire as to how they think the friendship is going - What works well and what doesn’t work well in the friendship? Does the friend feel the same about the friendship? Have they tried talking one on one with the friend to share how they are feeling?
- Remind them of the Friendship Facts 1. No friendship is perfect, 2. All friendships are different, 3. Trust and respect and the most important qualities of a friendship, 4. Friendships change and that is ok!
- Help them think about where their friendship sits on the friend-o-metre, is it healthy or unhealthy for them?
- Do they think it is changing and what are they thinking they would like to do?
- Together brainstorm lots of options, they could spend less time together, start to hang out with some other students, visit the Mindfulness Centre to do some craft, play a game. Decide to stay in the group but be more aware of this friend's traits and what situations may cause problems. E.g if this is a friend who has broken their trust, they may decide not to share their closest feelings, stories etc with them.
- Decide on some respectful quick comebacks (for if there is mean on purpose behaviour) and some conversation changers to use. Practise these at home so they are in your memory bank.
Working through friendship fires/tricky situations and friendship break ups is hard, especially when you are our students' age and all you want to do is fit it in and belong. Letting our students know that this is not always easy and it can come with big emotions. It is important that no matter what we try to navigate, we always do it with respect.
Congratulations to Karlius, who won our Year 5 competition to design a welcome sign to the Year 5 space.
Karlius and Yug spent many hours bringing the design to life. Look out for it next term outside 5C.
