Year 5 Newsletter

Dear Year 5 Parents,

Term 3 is quickly drawing to a close and what a fun filled ten weeks of learning it has been.

Early on there was Peter Pan, the production, which we’re sure you’d agree was fantastic. The students did a wonderful job of working together, with the huge effort from Ms Jedrys, to create an event to be remembered and to be proud of forever.

Footy day last week was a happy day! Everyone loved getting dressed in their team colours to proudly parade around the tiger turf. Mr D kept the crowd of children and adults laughing with his football-team introductions.

Our exploration of Australian history through the inquiry unit, Gold Rush: Good, bad or ugly?, has been eye opening. Students were amazed by some of the hardships that were endured in the hopes of finding gold. They enjoyed the investigative readings, the diary writing and we have all learned so much together. The excursion to Sovereign Hill was a real highlight, and helped to consolidate all of the research. The action-packed day was only possible with the help of our volunteer parents. Thank you to Nicole, Nenah, Cassie and Lauren! Be warned, many students are now keen to have a closer look for the shiny stuff around our local area, now that they know that Warrandyte and Diamond Creek have had gold discoveries in the past.

In Math, we have been building our fraction, decimals and percentage knowledge and in recent weeks we have looked at the concepts of perimeter (the boundary around an area) and area.

The literacy unit we have completed this term involved the analysis of a text Dirrarn by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler. Grammar and vocabulary activities were focused around the ideas presented in the story about a young indigenous girl who had to leave home to go to school.

Many students have applied to take part in SLIP (Student Leadership Induction Program )in Term 4. It will run for 8 weeks next term.

Finally, tomorrow is the last day of Term 3. We will finish with a whole school assembly and leave at 2.30pm to begin our holidays. We are already looking forward to Term 4: SLIP, our Pop Culture Inquiry Unit, Literacy Circles, Survivor Day and the Big Day Out!

Thank you again, for your continued support. We hope that you enjoy the break from the routine of school for the next couple of weeks. See you in Term 4!

Kind regards,

Claire, Alicia, Michael, Sarah, Prabh and Michelle
