Assistant Principals' Report

Dear HPS Community,

Despite our wild Melbourne weather this week, we have had another fantastic week of learning at HPS.

In Year 5, students participated in an incursion titled 'Mad About Science'. This was a hands on engaging experience with a focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Today Room 5 had an incursion called MAD ABOUT SCIENCE and a scientist named Caleb

who taught us AI and let us play with some robots, but the best part was comparing new and old objects and pictures. An example: a VERY old camera with an iPad, that would be a pair. By Mason, Thien and Adley Room 5

We both think it was so cool and a great experience, we still can’t believe that the AI could guess what we were drawing! “I drew a whale!” (Harriet).

“I drew a purse!” (Annika.) it’s so cool yet scary that AI is capable of this stuff!

We can’t wait to see what the future holds with AI. Bye from Annika, Harriet.

We think the experience of people coming to our school to learn about AI was really interesting

and we learned a lot about it. Our favourite part was learning how to program and work with robots! We found it amazing to control objects by electricity and our knowledge. It was a bit challenging but, in the end, when you know how to do it, it is really fun!

The Morse code segment in the Mad About Science incursion was really fun because we found out how Morse Code works. He showed us  ***   - - -  *** which means SOS. He also showed us an old piece of paper from a very old machine that had dots in a pattern that was like a code. It looked like a really old version of Morse Code.

Here’s an example of Morse Code: - -   - - -   *-*  ***  *       -*-*  - - -   -**   *    **  ***    **-*   **-  -*   By Giacomo Room 5

This week, the Year 4s held a market and invited the Foundation students to come along. This was a cross-age opportunity for students to develop money and financial skills and knowledge such as counting collections , adding coins and notes and giving change.

The Year 4 market was a really fun multi-class event with the wonderful Foundation students. When they came in they got one ten dollar note and two five dollar notes to spend.

In the market we had: craft pizza, poems, frisbees, jewellery, bookmarks, gift cards, origami, footy cards plus AFL posters, artworks/wall art, books, craft ice cream, squiggle time cards and dream catchers! Our learning involved money - the foundation students had to give the correct money and the Year 4’s had to give back the correct change. The foundation students, Year 4’s and teachers had so much fun! By Luke H Room 24

Next week is Planning Week at HPS. The teachers from each level will come together to plan for the upcoming term. This is a great opportunity for collaboration and planning for differentiation in teaching and learning. The students will have all their specialists on the one day.

Monday 9th September: Year 4

Tuesday 10th September: Year 3 and Year 6

Wednesday 11th September: Foundation and Year 1

Thursday 12th September: Year 2

Friday 13th September: Year 5

Have a great weekend!
