What a busy start to Term 4 and congratulations to all our Preps for settling back into our classroom routines and expectations after the holidays.
In Literacy, we have been learning and revising short a/i/o sounds in words. The children created a short recount writing piece about their holidays using capital letters, spaces between their words and full stops. We have been learning about common and proper nouns and using capital letters for names of people and places. In class we have been learning about author/illustrator Eric Carle. We read the story ‘The Bad-Tempered Ladybird’ and completed a craft and writing activity about ‘When I am grouchy…….'.
In Maths, we have been learning about adding numbers to find the sum or total. We brainstormed what addition means (add, plus, +) and the strategies that we can use to add groups together, such as using unifix, counters, fingers, pictures and automatic recall of basic number facts. The children enjoyed learning about ‘doubles’ and played the game ‘Bubble Doubles’ with a partner using a dice. The children used different strategies to add 2 dice together to find the total and recorded their addition equations in their maths books.
Our students were very excited to work with their Year 5 Buddy and learn to log in to their assigned Chromebooks. Each Prep student has their own device to explore and use. We will be continuing to develop the students' skills to log in independently, use headphones, practise scrolling, using the mouse pad, arrow keys, space bar and type their passwords on their own.
In History, we are learning about artefacts, such as photographs. Students will prepare an oral presentation to the class titled ‘Me in a Bag’ with more details to follow shortly.
Last Friday it was perfect weather for our students to use and help tidy up our wonderful outdoor play and learning space. Students broke into small groups to help weed, tidy, plant potted colour and new vegetable seedlings in our raised garden beds, spread and fill the sandpit with fresh new sand, and play with some of our newly purchased toys and gardening equipment.
Mr Riley has another week in Prep B. He is a first-year student at Swinburne University. He has enjoyed working with small groups, listening to reading, taking Maths and Literacy lessons. We wish him all the very best with his future teaching career and thank him for the valuable contribution he has made over the past 4 weeks of his teaching placement.
We will now be referring to our Preps as the ‘Big Preps'. Our ‘Little Preps’ for 2025 will be commencing their transition sessions very soon. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were meeting and getting to know our students this year. How fast 12 months goes by and how far our students have progressed in that time.
Upcoming whole school events include Tree Planting Day, Colour Run, Swimming Program and the Prep Alphabet Concert. More details to follow for all of these in the coming weeks.
Students are nominated by their teachers to receive a certificate of acknowledgment. The below student's certificates will be presented at our next assembly.
