Regional Tournament of Minds Competition
On Saturday 16 August, three Kilvington teams from Year 5, Year 7 and Year 8 competed at the regional Tournament of Minds (TOM) competition at Deakin University, Burwood.
TOM is a problem-solving program for junior and senior students that builds skills in critical and creative thinking, teamwork, time management, collaboration and more.
YEAR 5 TOMs TEAM
Our Year 5 Team took on the STEM Challenge, Re-Union, which explored what might cause conflict between the Earth’s four spheres - land, air, water and living things. To support their presentation, students had to write a scientific script, build a model and include creative elements such as props, costumes and a song.
YEAR 7 TOMs TEAM
Our Year 7 Team entered the Language and Literature Challenge, Tales of Light, Dark and Tan, where they had to reflect on themes of good and evil, and hope and redemption. They brought to life Shaun Tan’s picture-book Cicada.
YEAR 8 TOMs TEAM
Our Year 8 Team tackled the Social Science Challenge, TOMmunity Tackles Town Tensions. This involved pitching a new recreational facility to a community forum. Mapping, script writing, a rap song and model building were all an integral part of this challenge. On the day, they also completed a spontaneous challenge, which tested their creativity, teamwork and quick thinking.
The Year 8 team were the most successful on the day, receiving an Honours Award and placing in the top 10% of teams in the Metro Central Region - an impressive achievement! They will now represent Kilvington at the TOM Victorian State Finals at La Trobe University on Sunday 14 September.
TOMs was a really great experience, and I think it taught us many things. We had to work together as a group and, with limited time, we still managed to pull through and make - in my opinion - a really great play. I had a ton of fun writing the script and making props. I loved answering a new and abstract problem. We were really grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of this experience! - Arjun Panicker, Year 8
We are so proud of all our students who competed in this year’s Tournament of Minds, and we wish our Year 8 team the very best for the State Finals.
