Year 9 Market Day
On Friday 8 November, Year 9 Commerce held their Annual Market Day for their final assessment task. Hundreds of drinks and treats were sold from stalls, each created by separate groups organised by the students, there was even a carwash for our hardworking teachers! In the weeks leading up to this, we worked tirelessly within our groups to plan; conducting market research, deciding what product/service we would sell, how to promote our business venture and constructing an effective business plan using the skills we acquired in class. All of this in accumulation resulted in a very successful day with the class of 16 students making a total of $919! In view of our Catholic values at St Joseph’s Catholic College we decided to donate our profit to the Red Door Kitchen and The Cancer Council. None of this would have been possible, however, if it weren’t for all the students and teachers who brought money and supported our businesses on the day – THANK YOU! Also, another big thanks to Miss Ritter, our teacher, who made all of this possible.

The Market Day was a really good experience, which taught me a lot about what is involved in running a business and making a profit. I learnt how difficult it can be to keep up with customers, handing back change and making sure they were getting the correct products. As a group we realised how to source products with a limited amount of money, in order to achieve a profit.

Year 10 Visit to NSW Parliament
On 14 November, the Year 10 Commerce classes took a minibus to Sydney to get a tour of NSW Parliament and discover how the state is governed.
This aligned well with our studies earlier this year which revolved around the Australian Legal system and the political organisation of our country. We started off by getting a tour of parliament by Brett, which included looking into the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council. After a small tour, we ended up going to view Question Time, this involved many politicians in the Legislative Council bringing up any issues they currently have and making speeches or debating them. This was very hectic and involved a lot of angry politicians yelling. Dave Layzell (Upper Hunter MP) also showed us around, and ended up taking us to the cafeteria for lunch and then into the Nationals Conference Room (which had an awesome view of the Sydney Opera House). As we were walking around, we ended up running into Chris Minns, who is the Premier of NSW, and we got a photo with him right outside of an elevator. We ended up running into Chris a little bit later - he was kind enough to let us to look into his office and Casey even got to sit in his chair! It was a great experience, and we would love to visit again!

Aberdeen History Group Essay Competition
Students of History at St. Joseph’s this year were offered a wonderful opportunity from the Aberdeen History Group Association, to participate in an essay competition with the donation of prizes to the monetary value of:
1st Prize $100
2nd Prize $50
3rd Prize $30
This competition was open to any student in years 7-10 and received a lot of support from both staff and students alike.
Students were asked to write an essay about Aberdeen or nearby rural surroundings with the emphasis on the competition content being both LOCAL and HISTORY.
The essay needed to be between 500 and 1000 words and structured in the traditional method of having: an introduction; a body; and, a conclusion. The ‘story’of the local item of interest was to be told in chronological order from the past to the logical end.
On Friday of Week 8, the Aberdeen Historical Group were pleased to attend the school and announce the prize winners.
1st place went to Will L, Year 10, for his essay on the History of Merriwa’s Agriculutral Tendencies,
2nd place went to Llayton A, Year 8, on ‘Rock’n the Brook’ and,
3rd place went to Evie W, Year 7, on The History of the Scone Horse Festival.
I would like to congratulate all students who entered the competition. The standard of entries was very high and we hope to make this an annual competition, in collaboration with the Aberdeen History Group. I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to this group, for offering the students of St. Joseph’s a chance to participate in something very valuable and worthwhile.
