Year 10 Induction Day

Every day matters

Year 10 Induction Day

On the 29th of January, 2025, Homestead Senior Secondary College welcomed their newest cohort of students into the school. For the first time since 2020, our grounds were entirely populated with Year 10s as we instituted our first ever “Year 10 Induction Day”. After receiving feedback from previous students that the step from Year 9 into Year 10 was more of a leap as they navigated new terminology, new expectations and new surroundings, the leadership team at HSSC decided that a day which focused on developing our new students’ “Homestead Literacy” was a good and worthwhile use of time.

So while the Year 11s and 12s enjoyed one sleep in and frantically completed the last of their holiday homework, our new Year 10s learned about the different behavioural, learning and assessment expectations at HSSC, as well as how to navigate the world of Compass, Google Sites and the Google Drive. They also found out about some of the clubs and opportunities for leadership roles which exist at Homestead.

Students completed online “scavenger hunts”, listened to presentations, and provided feedback on other clubs and societies they might like to see implemented at Homestead with some great ideas like a board and card games club, a crochet group and anime fan groups being suggested by our new students.

Both teachers and students appreciated the opportunity to meet each other and help the Year 10s settle into their new surroundings before we hit the ground running with the rest of the school year. We received incredible feedback from both students and teachers including the following:

One thing I enjoyed about today was…

  • How the teachers and staff are very nice people
  • Learning of the different clubs to join
  • Learning about how Homestead works.
  • Getting access to the things we need (lockers, websites, etc) straight away, rather than as we go

What did you feel was a success of today?

  • Providing structured time outside of class time to clearly set the expectations of the College and connect devices.
  • The practical activities (writing an email to a teacher etc) were fantastic - I liked watching them go through the processes of things they will have to do everyday.
  • Ran very smoothly! students knew where they needed to be, lots of great info in the first session…

A big thankyou to everyone who helped build the program and all those who took sessions and provided feedback! A huge shout out to our wonderful student leaders who came in on their last day of holidays to help welcome our Year 10s and provide information and support from a student perspective.

We look forward to further developing the program as we continue to grow, helping our Year 10s become true Homesteaders!
