Platypus Classroom

Literacy

In literacy, Platypus students have finished our novel study of Storm Boy. Students engaged deeply with all aspects of the learning, paying close attention to the structure of a narrative using Freytag’s Pyramid to plot each of the major events. As a class, we discussed how Colin Thiele used a subverted resolution rather than a traditional ending. Students wrote a reflective paragraph explaining why they believed, or did not believe, that the ending was more effective for conveying Colin Thiele’s message about wildlife conservation.

In writing, students have been planning, drafting and editing their own narrative stories, applying the elements and techniques they have learnt throughout the unit. We are looking forward to sharing their completed stories soon.

Maths

In maths, students are making great progress in their Great Australian Times Tables Race and are proud of their improvement. It has been wonderful to see students tracking both their speed and accuracy as they build confidence with multiplication facts.

Over the past fortnight, students have been learning about data. Years 3–5 have been posing questions that generate categorical data and interpreting and creating a range of data displays, including tables, dot plots and column graphs. Year 6 students have been identifying missing information in graphs, interpreting positive and negative integers on data displays, and analysing biased or misleading methods used to collect and present data.

Our Year 6 students are also preparing to submit their work for the Australian Maths Trust Maths Competition, which they have been completing with Ms Grason every Tuesday. We look forward to celebrating the results of their hard work and perseverance.
