Leading Teacher - Pathways and Transitions
Classroom Teacher
This week we proudly celebrate National Careers Week, an opportunity to encourage students to explore the many pathways available to them beyond secondary school and to reflect on their future goals and aspirations.
Throughout this term all Highvale students will be involved in a range of activities designed to build career awareness, develop employability skills, and inspire future planning. These included pathway discussions, career investigations, university and TAFE information sessions, and opportunities to connect learning in the classroom with real-world careers.
At our school, we believe career development is an ongoing journey. National Careers Week provides an important reminder for students to stay curious, ask questions, and explore the many opportunities available to them. Whether students are considering university, TAFE, apprenticeships, traineeships, employment, or other pathways, the key message is that there are many successful pathways to achieve their goals.
Here’s what the Careers and Pathways team has been working on:
Careers Expo – 28 April
Thank you again to all students, families, exhibitors, and staff who attended our Careers Expo and helped make it such a successful and valuable event for our school community.
Subject Expo – 2 June
Students will have the opportunity to explore the wide range of subjects offered at Highvale across both the Junior and Senior School as they begin preparing for 2027 subject selections. The purpose of this event is to bring our Curriculum Handbooks to life and provide students with the opportunity to ask questions and speak directly with teachers and students about different subject areas.
Senior School Information Night – 9 June
This event is primarily designed for Year 10 students and families preparing for Year 11; however, Year 9 students and families are also encouraged to attend. The Careers and Pathways team will present information about Senior School pathways, including VCE, VCE-Vocational Major (VCE-VM), VET programs, and School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs). We strongly encourage families to attend to learn more about the options available and ask questions.
Connect Classes
Career education at Highvale is primarily delivered through our Connect program. Throughout this term, students across all year levels will participate in a range of career and pathway-related activities designed to support future planning, goal setting, and pathway exploration.
Morrisby Counselling Sessions – 11–15 May
Year 9 students are currently participating in individual counselling sessions based on their Morrisby profiling results. These sessions are designed to help students better understand their strengths, interests, learning preferences, and possible future career pathways.
Deakin University Excursion – 27 May
All Year 10 students will attend an excursion to Deakin University, where they will participate in four interactive workshops and hear from former Highvale students who are now studying at Deakin. This experience aims to give students greater insight into university life and future study opportunities.
Still to Come
Year Level Excursions
Additional pathway excursions are currently being planned for Year 9 and Year 11 students. Year 11 students will attend a full-day excursion to Swinburne University, while Year 9 students will visit Holmesglen TAFE to explore vocational and tertiary education opportunities.
ADF Lunchtime Presentation
A lunchtime presentation from the Australian Defence Force is also being organised, with the date to be confirmed shortly.
