Mandarin Newsletter – Week 4 Term 2 2026
母亲节快乐!!Mu Qin Jie Kuai Le!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the lovely mums and the special ones in your families!
Junior Level
During the first few weeks of our Mandarin lessons, Prep students have been reviewing and extending the vocabulary of numbers and daily useful phrases. We also explored lots of new Mandarin songs and how to use strokes to form different Chinese characters in our handwriting practice. Many of us are feeling very proud of ourselves for how quickly we learnt to count from zero up to fifty in Mandarin! As for our Year 1/2 students, we have been exploring the topic of animals with a focus on reading out the pinyin of Mandarin words, and many of us also made great progress in our independent Chinese character writing without using the character tracing sheets. In this term, we will also be engaging in lots of short conversations and simple sentences to further build up our awareness of the sentence structure in the Chinese language.
Middle Level
In the first few weeks, students from Year 3/4 classes reviewed the key words and expressions around the topic of academic subjects. We also created our own ‘lucky dip jar’ with different pop quiz questions that can help us to review and practice all the learnt phrases and vocabulary. Throughout this term, students will further use learned phrases and sentence structures to discuss different places in their neighbourhoods and who works at those places. They will also be exploring the lifestyle in Chinese provincial capitals for their cultural learning.
Senior Level
For our Year 5/6 students, as the extended learning from last term, we used our language mat to further extend our spoken language around useful nouns and question words in the school context. Many of us are also showing big progress in reading out pinyin and writing the matching words in Chinese characters. During this term, we will explore the new topic of feelings and emotions and learn to use different sentence structures to express ourselves in Mandarin. We will also practise replacing words in modelled sentences to express a particular meaning and understand the specific word order in a Chinese sentence.
