Play-based Learning: Exploring Movement Outdoors

What if we provide space for learning in the outdoors?

This week, our Foundations students took learning outdoors to a new level, using both natural and manufactured materials to explore the many ways objects can move.

They tested, rolled, spun, tapped, and dropped objects on grass, bridges, and walls, discovering movement powered by wind, gravity, and momentum. New words were discovered to describe movement - a memory established through doing.

Every child excitedly shared their findings, celebrating curiosity and teamwork as ideas sparked new questions about how things move in the outdoors.

Quotes from the Children

  • Jake: "The first fuzz ball moved like it fell in the air and moved sideways."
  • Sam: "I put the pinecone in my hand and then spin and roll it in the air."
  • Adele: "When I throw this (cork), it just spins and then rolls on the ground."
  • Aston: "When I get one of the little rocks, I roll it, and it sounds like beautiful music and beat it like a xylophone."
  • Mignon: "The sound echoes; it moves on the wall."
  • Daniel: "The wood moves when you tap it."
  • Thomas: "This lid is spinning around and around."
  • Miggi: "When I put it (cone) on the bridge, it tumbled."
  • Lilly: "My lid spun in the air."

Yearbook Arrival

The students received their 2025 Yearbook this week! It was very exciting for the younger students to see their faces in a printed book for the first time.

We hope you enjoy flipping through the pages and looking back on the 2025 highlights. Thanks to the staff, students and parents for their contribution to the Yearbook. A special thanks to Jasper for designing the front cover.
