On Thursday, 23 April, Big Picture Academy students embarked on an exciting outlearning experience at the Three Creeks Gold Mine in Upper Bingara. The students were up bright and early, arriving at school ready to catch the bus to the historic mine site.
Once at the mine, the students immersed themselves in the fascinating world of geology and mining. They began their visit with a tour of the museum, where they learned about various metals and gems found in the area. Following this, the students tried their hand at fossicking, searching the grounds for their own crystals to take home as keepsakes.
The day continued with an educational tour that covered the rich history of the mines and fossicking traditions of the region. To finish off their adventure, the students enjoyed a hands-on gold panning session, experiencing firsthand the traditional methods used by miners.

Big Picture One: Exploring Interests and Building Skills
Big Picture One students have been actively engaged in a variety of personal interest projects this term. Their projects cover a wide range of topics, from caring for rabbits and exploring childcare, to investigating engineering concepts related to motorbike and aeroplane sizes. These projects allow students to follow their passions and develop valuable practical knowledge.
In addition to their personal projects, students have been learning about British Colonisation and its profound effects on the traditional owners of the land—Aboriginal Peoples. Through these lessons, students are gaining a deeper understanding of history, culture, and the importance of respect for the land and its original custodians.
The class has also been working on quantitative reasoning, building their mathematical skills through problem-solving activities. These sessions encourage critical thinking and apply mathematics to real-life situations, further strengthening the students’ “knowing how to learn” qualities.
It has been wonderful to see Big Picture One students demonstrating curiosity, independence, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning. Well done to everyone for their hard work and commitment!
Year 9 and 10 Food Technology Elective: Food Selection for Nutrition and Health
This semester, our Year 9 and 10 Food Technology students have focused on the topic ‘Food Selection for Nutrition and Health’. Through engaging lessons and activities, students have explored how food choices, nutrition, and availability impact the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.
For their assessment tasks, students created informative posters highlighting the dietary requirements of particular age groups and developed two-day menus tailored to those needs. They also researched specific dietary illnesses, such as diabetes, and shared their knowledge through presentation posters.
In the kitchen, students practised hygienic work habits while preparing and cooking a variety of delicious foods, including ANZAC biscuit slice, fried rice, and Vegemite scrolls. These practical experiences have not only built their skills but also encouraged teamwork and safe food handling.
It has been a pleasure teaching the group. All students have worked to their best effort and shown great enthusiasm throughout the semester. Well done to everyone involved!

Letter's to home - Year 8 Woolgoolga Excursion
Dear Parents and Caregivers of Year 8,
Thank you for entrusting your children to us for what is proving a wonderful few days of camp. This morning we had surfing lessons and it was great to see nearly everyone have a go and manage to get up on their boards. A number of our Year 8's seem to be natural surfers. Sherkaya, Charlotte, Fletch, Rosie, Seth and Sam were up very quickly. Tessa happily collected shells on the beach. Izzy was in the water and loving it.
We're about to go to Treetops Adventure Park where there will be another opportunity to demonstrate resilience and learn a new skill.
The children have great appetites - tacos last night for dinner and they've all made filled rolls and had two each for lunch! It was pancakes for breakfast this morning and Rosie, Jess, and Katie were the cooks. Brax and Fletch are going to help barbecue this evening.
Willson and I had a great chat yesterday at the basketball court while Kade got a terrific shot in goal and Ryan raced down the court. Latai also kept the pace up the whole game.
Tonight we have sausages for dinner (thanks to the Fletcher family) and Tyleek, ever helpful, is going to assist.
I am very grateful to all the fund raising efforts - especially to the Year 8 children who raised funds even though they weren't going to camp and the Vidler family who cut and donated a trailer load of firewood. Thank you so much everyone - it has been worth it!
Warm wishes,
Madde Saville, Debra Kelliher, Tremane Patterson, and Dean Mitchell.
