Year 11 & 12 Outdoor and Environmental Studies Trip – Buchan

Recently, our Year 11 and 12 Outdoor and Environmental Studies students travelled to Buchan to participate in a caving and abseiling experience at Wilsons Cave.

The excursion provided students with valuable opportunities to complement their classroom learning around practical outdoor skills, risk assessment, and evaluating outdoor environments. Throughout the trip, students were challenged both physically and mentally as they navigated tight cave systems, worked together to solve problems, and demonstrated resilience in unfamiliar environments.

One of the highlights of the trip was tackling the “Letterbox” section of the cave, with several students even managing to climb back up through the narrow passage — an impressive achievement! Students also completed a short, but challenging abseil, pushing themselves outside their comfort zones and showing excellent determination and teamwork.

It was fantastic to see students supporting one another, facing fears, and embracing the challenges of the experience with such positive attitudes. The trip was an outstanding opportunity for students to further develop confidence, leadership, and practical outdoor skills in a unique natural environment.
