College Principal Message

Welcome to Term 2

I am delighted to welcome all students, families, and staff to Term 2 at Copperfield College following an exceptionally busy, successful, and rewarding start to the school year. The energy, enthusiasm, and collective commitment demonstrated throughout Term 1 have established a strong foundation for what promises to be another outstanding term of learning, growth, and achievement across our College community.

The opening term of the year was marked by a wide range of significant events and opportunities that strengthened both student learning and community engagement. Highlights included the Year 12 Study Skills Program, visits to our feeder primary schools, Parent/Teacher Conferences, Year 7 Meet and Greet evenings, Year 6 Discovery Nights and Information Evening, Athletics Day, and whole-school assemblies. These important initiatives not only supported student transition and wellbeing, but also reinforced the strong partnerships that exist between home and school.

As we now into Term 2, we enter an important period of consolidation in teaching and learning. This ten-week term provides students with an opportunity to establish consistent routines, maintain focus, and continue striving for personal excellence in all aspects of College life. I encourage every student to remain committed to their learning goals and to approach each day with determination, resilience, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. Families are also reminded that Semester One will conclude on Friday 12 June at the end of Week 8, ahead of the final two weeks of the term.

The beginning of Term 2 has already been marked by a truly historic and proud milestone in the history of our College. On Wednesday 22 April, Copperfield College held its inaugural Whole School Athletics Carnival. For the first time, students and staff from both the Junior and Senior Campuses came together as one united College community to participate in a single, whole-school event. This occasion was a powerful reflection of our College identity and our enduring belief in “One College, Three Sites, One Family.”

The Athletics Carnival was an overwhelming success, showcasing outstanding participation, teamwork, resilience, and school spirit across all year levels. It was inspiring to witness students supporting and encouraging one another, stepping beyond their comfort zones, and embracing the day with positivity, enthusiasm, and pride. Equally significant was the opportunity the event provided for students, staff, and families to connect and celebrate together as one College community. We look forward to building on the success of this event and establishing it as a valued annual tradition for many years to come.

At Copperfield College, our values of Respect, Relationships, Responsibility, and Excellence remain at the heart of everything we do. These values are embedded not only within our classrooms, but also in the way our students engage with one another, contribute to the broader community, and approach their personal and academic growth. We are immensely proud of the positive manner in which our students continue to uphold and demonstrate these values every day.

Our unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching and learning continues to drive strong outcomes across the College. Our highly dedicated staff work tirelessly to create engaging, challenging, and supportive learning environments that inspire students to think critically, collaborate effectively, and develop a lifelong love of learning. Through innovative teaching practices, targeted intervention programs, and personalised support, we remain committed to ensuring that every student is empowered to achieve success and realise their full potential.

Beyond the classroom, students continue to benefit from the rich and diverse range of extracurricular opportunities available at Copperfield College. Whether through sport, the arts, student leadership, clubs, competitions, or community initiatives, these experiences play a vital role in developing confidence, resilience, creativity, and important life skills. They also provide students with opportunities to discover their passions, build meaningful connections, and contribute positively to the life of the College.

We also take enormous pride in celebrating the many achievements of our students across academic, sporting, cultural, and community pursuits. Their dedication, perseverance, and pursuit of excellence are a testament to the strength, character, and spirit of our College community and embody our shared commitment to empowering every student to Aspire and Achieve.

As we progress through Term 2, I look forward to continuing to work in partnership with our students, staff, and families to ensure every young person at Copperfield College is supported to thrive, grow, and succeed. Together, we will continue to build a culture of high expectations, inclusivity, opportunity, and excellence across all areas of College life.

Thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement, and commitment to our College community. I wish all members of the Copperfield College community a productive, positive, and highly successful Term 2.

WHY CHOOSE A PUBLIC SCHOOL.

As families begin the important process of selecting a secondary school for their child, many are faced with one of the most significant educational decisions they will make.

Understandably, parents want a school that will nurture their child’s potential, support their wellbeing, and provide opportunities for future success.

There is often a widely held perception that private schooling automatically leads to stronger academic outcomes. However, extensive educational research suggests this assumption is not necessarily supported by evidence.

A review of almost 30 academic studies found that public schools achieve student outcomes comparable to those of Catholic and Independent schools across a broad range of educational measures (Cobbold, 2015). The review identified no significant differences in the performance of students from public, Catholic, or Independent schools in national and international assessments, nor in university completion rates. Importantly, the research also found that students from public schools often outperform their peers during their first year of university, achieving higher average grades than students from Catholic and Independent schools.

For families interested in exploring the findings further, additional information can be accessed through the following resource: Save Our Schools Australia

As an educational leader within the public education system, I believe it is important that families are provided with balanced and evidence-informed information to support their decision-making. Public education continues to play a vital role in developing the academic, social, and emotional growth of young people and in empowering every student to thrive, regardless of background or circumstance.

Public schools offer far more than academic achievement alone. They provide inclusive, diverse, and community-focused environments where students learn alongside peers from a wide range of cultural, social, and economic backgrounds. In doing so, students develop the empathy, resilience, collaboration, and interpersonal skills that are increasingly valued in both higher education and the modern workforce.

There are many compelling reasons why families continue to choose public education:

  • Outstanding Value and AccessibilityPublic schools provide high-quality education that is accessible to all families. While some private schools charge significant annual tuition fees, public education ensures every child has access to excellent learning opportunities regardless of financial circumstance.
  • Diversity and Real-World LearningPublic schools reflect the rich diversity of our broader Australian community. Students learn to work collaboratively with others from different backgrounds and perspectives, preparing them for life beyond school and for success in an increasingly interconnected world.
  • Strong Community ConnectionsAs neighbourhood schools, public schools foster strong local relationships and a genuine sense of belonging. Families are able to build meaningful connections with other parents, staff, and the wider community, strengthening partnerships that support student success.
  • High-Quality Teaching and LearningThe quality of teaching remains one of the most influential factors in student achievement. Public schools continue to invest heavily in teacher development through mentoring, professional learning, collaboration, student feedback, and evidence-based instructional practices to ensure students receive the highest standard of education.

Public schools remain the foundation of Australia’s education system and reflect the values of equity, opportunity, inclusion, and aspiration. They provide every child with the opportunity to succeed, achieve personal excellence, and pursue their future ambitions with confidence.

As Principal of Copperfield College, and having proudly served within public education for nearly four decades, I am continually inspired by the achievements, resilience, and growth of our students, as well as the dedication and professionalism of our staff. Our College community is committed to ensuring that every young person is supported to Aspire and Achieve.

I warmly encourage families considering secondary school options to visit our College and experience firsthand the outstanding learning environments, programs, and opportunities available to students at both our Junior Campuses. School tours provide an invaluable opportunity to see the College in operation, meet our leadership teams, and gain insight into the many ways we support students academically, socially, and emotionally.

Choosing the right secondary school is one of the most important decisions a family can make. Finding a school that aligns with your child’s individual strengths, interests, and aspirations can have a profound impact not only on their success at school, but also on their future pathways and overall wellbeing.

Rediscover the wonders of Reading!

In today’s rapidly evolving digital world, the way we engage with reading continues to transform. eBooks, tablets, audiobooks, mobile applications, and other technological platforms have significantly expanded access to information and literature. Yet despite these advances, the importance of traditional reading remains as strong as ever. Printed texts continue to play a vital role throughout our daily lives and wider society, and the ability to read with confidence and understanding remains one of the most powerful skills a young person can develop.

Reading is far more than an academic requirement; it is a lifelong skill that underpins success in education, employment, communication, and everyday life. From interpreting instructions and completing job applications to understanding media, engaging with technology, and participating fully in society, literacy is everywhere and unavoidable.

For many Australians, however, reading can present significant challenges. It is estimated that approximately one in five people experience difficulties with reading, with many remaining undiagnosed or receiving limited support. For these individuals, as well as for students learning English as an additional language, reading can often become a source of stress, frustration, and diminished confidence. Without the appropriate intervention and support, these challenges can impact not only academic progress, but also a student’s overall wellbeing and future opportunities.

At Copperfield College, we firmly believe in the philosophy of “Learn to Read before Reading to Learn.” Literacy and Numeracy are fundamental priorities across the College, forming the foundation for success across all learning areas and future pathways.

To support this commitment, the College provides targeted Literacy, Reading, and Numeracy intervention programs for many students in Years 7–9. Through formative assessment, triangulated student data, and ongoing monitoring, students are carefully identified and placed into programs that best meet their individual learning needs.

Importantly, this process occurs in close consultation with families to ensure a collaborative and supportive approach to student growth and achievement.

Our staff are deeply committed to ensuring that no student falls through the cracks. Through explicit teaching, evidence-based intervention strategies, and personalised support, we aim to build students’ confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and empower every learner to experience success.

At Copperfield College, we take great pride in improving student outcomes and expanding future opportunities for all young people. Mastering reading is the bedrock of lifelong learning and opens the door to greater independence, critical thinking, creativity, and personal achievement. By fostering strong literacy skills, we are equipping our students not only for academic success, but also for meaningful participation in an increasingly complex and connected world.
