Anxiety and Young People

As members of the Wellbeing Team, we know that anxiety is a common part of growing up and something many young people experience at different times in their lives. In many situations, anxiety can actually be helpful — it encourages young people to prepare for challenges, stay alert and approach new experiences with care. Feeling nervous before a test, a sporting event or a performance is completely normal and can often help motivate and guide positive action.

At the same time, we are increasingly seeing anxiety become more intense and ongoing for many children and adolescents. Young people today are navigating a fast-paced and often demanding world. Academic pressures, friendship challenges, family changes and the constant influence of social and digital media can all contribute to heightened feelings of stress and worry.

When anxiety becomes overwhelming or goes unsupported, it can begin to impact many areas of a young person’s life, including their wellbeing, learning, relationships and self-confidence. One of the challenges with anxiety is that it can present differently in every child. Some young people may openly express their worries, while others may become withdrawn, irritable, avoid certain situations or complain of physical symptoms such as headaches or stomach aches.

As a school, we believe that supporting young people begins with understanding and open conversations. This edition of SchoolTV has been selected to help raise awareness about anxiety and provide families with practical strategies to support children and adolescents in healthy and constructive ways.

We encourage you to take some time to explore the information shared in this edition and reflect on how it may support your family. As always, if you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing, please don’t hesitate to contact the school counsellor or seek support from a trusted health professional.
