National Walk For Truth
Joel from 5/6A
Uncle Bill Nicholson’s words enlightened the mind, guiding the spirit to an understanding of the full extent of Aboriginal culture, truth and storytelling. His words not only told, they showed. They showed us Woiwurrung knowledge, how to take only what you need, not what is wanted. Although by far the most important part of the conversation was how to care for Country.
I only had a short tirade of clapping to contain my excitement. Aunty Esme strode onto the stage representing the ABORIGINAL ADVANCEMENT LEAGUE. She explained to us how this centre we’re standing in is the first Aboriginal run community organisation in Australia. I felt honoured to be standing in such an important landmark for Aboriginal culture and growth.
After the conversation ended, we took part in a smoking ceremony. I had to wait a while but I didn’t mind. It was a chance for me to glimpse the spectacle and lock it in my brain. When my turn to pass through the smoke arrived, I was ready to wash away bad spirits and bring in the good ones. I was ready for the day ahead.
