Student Futures

From the Head of VCE
As we move further into the term, our VCE students continue to engage in a range of valuable career and pathway exploration opportunities designed to broaden their understanding of future study and employment options.
On Thursday 7 May, students attended presentations from representatives of St Mary's College and the Australian National University student recruitment teams. These sessions provided valuable insight into university life, accommodation options, course offerings, scholarships, and the transition from secondary school to tertiary study. Students were able to ask questions and gain a greater understanding of the opportunities available beyond school, helping them make more informed decisions about their future pathways.
On Tuesday 19 May, selected students interested in the medical and health sciences field will have the opportunity to participate in the AACRM Medical Immersion Day at the Bendigo Tech School. This immersive experience will provide students with firsthand insight into rural and regional healthcare pathways, medical careers, and the skills required within the industry.
On Wednesday 20 May, Girton will host two information sessions presented by the Australian Defence Force. These sessions will provide students with information about the wide range of career pathways available within the Defence Force, including entry pathways, training opportunities, university sponsorships, apprenticeships, and life in the ADF. Students interested in engineering, health sciences, trades, aviation, technology, leadership, and many other fields are encouraged to attend.
On Thursday 21 May, our Year 10 cohort will also be attending the Tomorrow Bound Careers Expo. This event brings together a wide range of tertiary providers, apprenticeship organisations, training institutions, and industry representatives. The expo is an excellent opportunity for students to begin thinking more deeply about their future career directions and VCE subject selections.
We encourage all students to make the most of these opportunities by engaging positively, asking questions, and exploring the possibilities available to them as they begin planning for life beyond school.

The General Achievement Test (GAT) will be held on the 16 June 2026. This year, the GAT will be held in the Girton Gym and the Naunton Family Building. Further information regarding timings, room allocations and expectations for the day will be sent via email closer to the date.
The GAT is a pen-and-paper test of general knowledge and skills taken by students in the course of completing their senior secondary studies. It plays an important role in the quality assurance of VCE assessments and also provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate they meet the Victorian Literacy and Numeracy Standards expected at a senior secondary level. No special study is needed. Past study of subjects like English, Mathematics, Science and History prepares students for the GAT by building their general knowledge and skills in writing, numeracy and reasoning.
