Kitchen Garden

On Tuesday 5th of May our Year 5/6 students rolled up their sleeves and dove into another vibrant and action-packed garden session. Now in their third year of learning in this space, these young gardeners continued to impress with their enthusiasm, teamwork and growing knowledge of how food makes its journey from soil to plate.
One of the true highlights of our time in the garden is the sense of curiosity it sparks. Questions were flying, discoveries were being made and hands were busy at every turn. This year marks an exciting milestone for our program. For the very first time, students planted an entire selection of crops grown from seeds we have collected ourselves. From coriander, spinach, silver beet to carrots, beetroot, broccolini, radish and marigolds, our garden is becoming a full-circle learning environment in the truest sense.
There was no shortage of important work to be done. Students carefully pruned our stone fruit trees and gave the citrus orchard a well-earned trim. Budding horticulturists also tackled the challenge of gall wasp, peeling back the bumps to uncover the tiny eggs hidden beneath, a fascinating and hands-on science lesson. Along the chicken run, a hardworking team took on the weeding. Some of these weeds will be transformed into nutrient-rich fertiliser through decomposition, helping to nourish our garden for seasons to come.
Looking ahead, we are preparing to take on the mighty task of clearing our ever-expanding pumpkin patch, a big job that will require teamwork, energy and plenty of determination. Watch this space… and wish us luck!
It is sessions like these that bring learning to life and we could not be prouder of the energy and spirit our students bring to the garden each session.
